Chapter 1048 begins with Momonosuke struggling to move Onigashima away from Luffy’s attack. Kaido ignited himself with his Fire Dragon torch, burning Luffy’s hand in the process. Both hit the blow, but equally talented. In a flashback, Wano’s downfall is shown, from Oden’s death to the impact the plants have on crops and surrounding water. Orochi threatens to kill Hiyori, but Denjiro arrives just in time and kills him.
The clash between Kaido and Luffy is intense when Chapter 1049 begins. In the midst of their rivalry, Kaido praises Luffy for how far he’s come, but he still doesn’t believe that the Straw Hats have what it takes to change the world. Then he thought back to his past.
A child Kaido walks in the middle of a war-torn city, hailed as a strong soldier at the age of ten. Jumping forward, 46 years before the current battle, Kaido questions why the Vodka Kingdom must answer the Celestial Dragons and pay their respects to them. The tributes are collected by waging war against other regions. If they don’t pay tribute, their human rights will be taken away.
He was later sent to the Navy by his relatives when he was about 13 years old, as they could no longer control him. Part of the kaido’s enlistment conditions was a seat at the next shrine, which angered Kaido. He claims he is not a political pawn. At some point, he escaped from the Marines, which was part of a pattern that allowed himself to be captured just to make sure he had food before escaping again.
Two years later, on Fullalead Island, he won after a fight at the age of 15. A young Whitebeard asked Kaido if he wanted to join the Rocks, to which he agreed. After venturing to God’s Valley and attacking several World Nobles, the Rocks Pirates lost to Garp and Roger after the two joined forces, shocking all who knew. It is suspected that their internal wars played a role in their own defeat.
Ten years after the fall of the Rocks Pirates, Kaido has established his own crew and has earned a fearsome reputation. King was by his side, listening to Kaido and Kurozumi Higurashi talk about human nature and how the power to solve problems. Higurashi likens them to animals, to which Kaido fully agrees.
She goes on to claim that weapons are the “loudest” thing and proposes a deal to Kaido. Kaido continued to declare war on the World Nobles. During a discussion with King, Kaido said that Yamato talked about Joyboy and how Oden wanted to open Wano’s borders so Joyboy could come. He went on to say that he knew Joyboy’s identity, which King asked who it was.
Back in the present, the remaining CP0 agent escaped from Onigashima. Momonosuke was watching the fight from below before Yamato called him to create the Fire Cloud needed to move the island. He tried again to create them, but was still struggling. Meanwhile, the people of the Flower Capital still celebrate and release sky boats into the air.
On the Stage, the rest of the fighters began to hear cries of some kind coming from the castle. They wonder what the noise is, but they soon find out when the water wave Raizo creates hits. Various groups are still inside caught up in the wave, including Brook and Robin, Usopp, Kikunojo and Kin’emon. Sanji and the women from the Pleasure Hall were also swept away by the flood. The water overflowed through the Treasure, where Hiyori and Denjiro were. Denjiro speaks to Hiyori as he hugs her, telling her that she is brave and strong.
Outside, Kaido’s Fire Cloud finally disappeared completely when Kaido asked Luffy what world he could create. Momonosuke gave it one last shot and managed to create a cloud and successfully move the island away from below Kaido and Luffy. When it was out of range, Luffy answered Kaido’s question as he poured all his strength into one final attack. “I will create a world where my friends can eat until they’re full!!”
Finally, after an arduous struggle, Luffy broke through Kaido’s defenses and sent him crashing to the ground below. As he fell, he thought back to his conversation with King, revealing that Joyboy would be the last to defeat him. As the people of the Flower Capital watched the skyboats carry their wishes for freedom and peace into the sky, Momonosuke and Onigashima landed safely on the ground outside the city.
