One Piece author Eiichiro Oda and Luffy’s English voice actor, Colleen Clinkenbeard, have completely different ideas about Luffy’s career in the real world.
Clinkenbeard was present at MegaCon Orlando this year as a member of a panel titled “One Piece x One Piece: From Anime to Live Action.” She was joined by panelists Luci Christian (Nami) from the anime series and live-action actors Jacob Romero (Usopp), Jeff Ward (Buggy) and Aidan Scott (Helmeppo). All panelists were asked what their respective character would do for a living. While other characters are said to be looking for work, especially Helmeppo selling drugs to “rich white mothers”, Clinkenbeard states that Luffy is “unemployed”. This question was once posed to Oda, who commented that Luffy would be a firefighter.

One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda gave the Straw Hats non-pirate jobs
Through Animanch, Oda was once asked on SBS: “If the Straw Hats didn’t go to sea, what would they do?” Joining Luffy as a firefighter are Zoro (police officer), Usopp (graphic designer), Robin (cabin attendant), Sanji (hairdresser), Franky (pilot), Nami (kindergarten teacher), Chopper (elementary school teacher) and Brook (detective). This was before Jimbei joined the crew.
Of course, many of these answers are not surprising. Nami’s gentleness towards young characters like O-Tama and Momonosuke, Zoro’s former role as a bounty hunter, and Sanji’s well-groomed nature are especially well-suited to his roles as a teacher, policeman, and hairdresser. While Chopper would likely be feared by children, many suspecting him of being just a pet or a child, Luffy as a firefighter is perhaps the most controversial. Although Luffy has saved more than he lost, the character is often associated with starting fires rather than extinguishing them.
