There are a lot of things to keep in mind when animating an art anime like One Piece , where tense fight scenes, slapstick comedy, and beautiful scenery are the norm. While cutting corners is not an option, mistakes can happen when working under pressure.
One Piece goes through many changes in animation style for certain parts of the series, and guest animation teams take over the One Piece films.
With that said, it was during a slow-talking scene where the hilarious blink-and-you’ll-miss-it animation error was discovered, so it’s surprising how it made it past the final edit.
Found a funny animation error in One Piece
Reddit user EnnaOjala found an animation error in episode 238 of One Piece during the Water 7 arc, where Luffy was interrogated by shipwright Paulie and Rob Lucci at the time for secretly attacking the leader of the city of Iceburg.
Actually, Paulie, it’s us who deserve the explanation here. Not so much related to what’s going on with Luffy, but related to why your mouth disappeared? Why did it move down so far? Why is it still smoking?! How are you still talking? Is this something that happens to you often? Is this Paulie’s hidden devil fruit power?
We’ve heard of speaking from the butt, but speaking from the belly? What makes it even funnier is that Paulie always smokes cigars, so it looks like his talking belly is also stuffing a cigar in his pants. Adding to the humor is the seriousness of the situation and Paulie’s facial hair, which makes it seem like he’s very upset about the whole thing.
Fans in the comments section offered explanations to justify the innocent mistake, saying it was a problem with the animation layers and that the animators forgot to move the mouth back into place when syncing transformed with dialogue. Either way, it’s hilarious and Luffy’s expression perfectly matches the anxiety of seeing someone talking nonsense and having a habit of smoking.
