Luffy’s battle with Lucci proves that Kaido has not awakened his devil fruit
One Piece chapter #1069 answered that question once and for all. On Egghead Island, Luffy and the Straw Hats have the opportunity to encounter CP0 and their old enemy, Rob Lucci, who also has a Zoan Devil Fruit (Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard). Luffy and Lucci immediately fight and while the Straw Hat captain demonstrates his Gear Fifth power, Lucci responds by revealing that he has also awakened his Devil Fruit. The form he takes confirms that Kaido never awakened his Devil Fruit. Lucci appears slimmer than the Beast-Man form seen before. More importantly, Lucci now has distinctive puffs of smoke around his shoulders that look very similar to the puffs of smoke Luffy displays in his Gear Fifth form, proving that this is a common trait in awakened Zoan systems, something Kaido never shown.
To understand why Kaido never awakened his Devil Fruit, one need look no further than Eiichiro Oda’s notes regarding Gear Fifth, published in the Road To Laugh Tale special volume. 4. There, Oda mentions “the power of imagination” as an important aspect of Luffy’s awakening. This concept reappears in chapter #1069, when Dr. Vegapunk explains that Devil Fruits are the realization of human desires, turning imagination into reality. However, during his battle with Luffy, Kaido showed contempt for Devil Fruit users. According to him, the best way to stand on top of the world is Haki, a power born not from desire but from will. This means that Kaido’s reliance on Haki makes him less inclined to fully master his Devil Fruit abilities, including his awakening.
Can Gear 5 Luffy defeat Kaido with his awakened devil fruit?
Since the Kaido that Luffy fights and defeats at the end of Wano has not yet awakened his Devil Fruit, one naturally wonders if the fight would have ended differently if the former Yonko had truly fulfilled his Devil Fruit’s potential. your demons or not.
