Monsters is a short story first published in 1994 in Weekly Shonen Jump, three years before Luffy began his manga adventure to find One Piece. Netflix is adapting the story into a 25-minute OVA that takes place in Wano’s pastThe land of the samurai has been plagued by dragons more than once.
Monsters follows Zoro’s ancestor, Shimotsuki Ryuma, a swordsman from Wano on an adventure many years before Luffy’s quest to become Pirate King. Besides the one-shot, Ryuma first appeared in the Thriller Bark arc of One Piece, where Zoro must defeat his undead remains, reclaiming the legendary samurai’s katana. However, on January 21, 2024, the new Monsters anime will reveal more about his life and how he became a legend.
The story is about a legendary swordsman who is said to have achieved the title of “Sword God”. Ryuma became famous for slaying a fearsome dragon. This feat has had many One Piece theorists believe that Zoro will kill Kaido to honor One Piece’s origins in the Monster storyline. Even though that’s not the case, the new adaptation will likely clear up many questions regarding the adventures of Zoro’s ancient ancestors.

When the release of the One Piece prequel anime was first announced, fans were excited to know that they would get a glimpse into an unprecedented time period in the series’ history. However, what’s even more interesting is the news that The Monsters Netflix special will be created by the same talented artists who helped create beautiful projects like One Piece Film: Z and season one of Jujutsu Kaisen, Park Sung Hoo. His new animation studio, E&H Production, is taking on the challenge of adapting one of the early stories that helped set Eiichiro Oda on the path to creating the global phenomenon that is One Piece.

It is currently unclear whether the 25-minute Monsters OVA will be a direct adaptation of the original manga one-shot. The new animation could be filled with Easter eggs for Oda fans to discover. However, many of One Piece’s biggest mysteries revolve around the Void Century, the Ancient Weapon, and the Red Poneglif, which have remained unsolved in its world for hundreds of years. It is not impossible to think that Monsters may include shocking revelations directly connected to Eiichiro Oda’s favorite One Piece storyline. Either way, viewers will likely dive in and find connections to the anime and manga versions of Wano the One Piece that were recently released.

It’s been 30 years since Eiichiro Oda’s Monsters was first published. The author and his storytelling and illustrative talents have grown significantly since the 19-year-old Oda composed Ryuma’s story. Monsters and other early works by Oda were published in a collection called Wanted!, which included prototypes of A pieceThe first chapter is titled “Romantic Dawn, version 2.” Perhaps Netflix will consider adapting more Oda one-shots if Monsters: 103 Mercy Dragon Damnation made a strong impression on the audience when it debuted on January 21, 2024.
