A pieceits dub succeeds in making it one of its kind the best moments in the Dressrosa Arc are more emotional than the filler and even the manga has only a subtle change. Second only to the launch of Gear Fourth, Dressrosa’s ending is easily one of the best moments of the season, and what makes it so memorable is a scene in particular involving the powerful Admiral Fujitora, which the dub is even better with a subtle change.
Admiral Fujitora’s most memorable moment in One Piece occurred in Episode #744 when he wished he could see Luffy’s face and regretted blinding himself. It was at this point that Fujitora uttered his most iconic lines in the series, which in the Japanese subtitles can be translated as “I wish I hadn’t made myself blind. I want to see your face, I bet you look really nice.” The English dub makes this scene more emotional with a slight change in Fujitora’s dialogue, swapping it to,
“What a pity, I wish I could use these eyes one last time to see the face… of a man like you. I bet it’s filled with kindness.”
Although this change is very small, the difference in emotional impact between the subtitled and dubbed versions is too great to ignore. The dub not only enhances the overall scene, but also adds a whole new world of meaning to Fujitora’s perspective on Luffy.

The One Piece dub elevates Fujitora’s farewell scene
What makes this scene notable is that it clearly shows Fujitora’s newfound admiration for Luffy. Although the basic meaning remains the same in both versions, Fujitora’s dialogue in the dub conveys even greater respect than in the sub., goes beyond simple regret for blinding oneself. The dub version implies that Fujitora considers Luffy to be a truly special individual, so much so that if given the ability to look back, he would like to take that opportunity to see what a kind and wonderful man he was. What does Luffy look like?
More importantly, this scene is important in shaping Fujitora’s character by establishing his nuanced sense of justice and distinguishes him from other Admirals, especially Akainu. Scenes that reinforce Fujitora’s positive image are gradually staged throughout the Dressrosa Arc, demonstrating his ability to see beyond Luffy’s criminal status and recognize the good in him.
