The highly anticipated prequel to One Piece, Monsters has been confirmed as canon, following Shimotsuki Ryuma from Wano, who took on Zoro Shusui.
Summary
Netflix’s Monsters anime adaptation confirms that main character Ryuma is essentially the same character from One Piece. The anime makes subtle changes to Ryuma’s appearance, but these changes can be explained as age-related and are not significant enough to contradict the connection to One Piece. The decision to make Monsters a classic prequel to One Piece may have been influenced by the success of the One Piece series and Netflix’s desire to monopolize it.
NetflixLatest addition to his anime collection, Monsteris finally out and it appears The prequel could officially be released A piece. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s one-shot manga of the same name, Monsters has been all but confirmed to be a prequel that follows One Piece’s Ryuma with a few subtle but awesome changes.
A post-credits scene is added to Netflix Monsters confirms that main character Ryuma is the legendary samurai from Wano the one who bestowed upon Zoro Shusui on Thriller Bark. The scene in question is a clip from episode #362 of One Piece in which Ryuma’s zombie (animated by Moria using Brook’s shadow) throws Shusui to Zoro after their battle and Ryuma’s defeat, which further prove that both are one.
The anime adaptation of Monsters also makes other subtle changes such as giving Ryuma Shusui instead of the usual katana he carries in the manga, further painting the prequel as canon.

Netflix turns Ryuma from the Monsters Canon into One Piece
Although both have differences in that Shimotsuki Ryuma is known to have slain a dragon in Wano rather than in a foreign land, this their differences are easily overshadowed by their similarities. Other differences such as the gray hair observed on Ryuma’s zombie and the missing scar above his eye in Monsters could also be due to his hair having turned gray due to age and the scar formed later in life. Monster takes special care to refer to Ryuma as a warrior from a foreign country multiple times, urging viewers to make a connection with Wano.
Furthermore, according to Oda’s comments in the SBS section of chapter #457 of One Piece, the legendary warrior of Wano was greatly inspired by his opponent in Monsters. Therefore, the decision to turn the one-shot into a completely canonical prequel is not surprising. Retconning Monsters as a prequel to One Piece could be an attempt to capitalize on One Piece’s recent success and Netflix’s efforts to ensure its One Piece exclusivity as Monsters has also been listed as part of the One Piece Collection.
Overall, while the two may have started out as two different characters existing in two different canons, the anime adaptation of Monsters has managed to bridge the gap between the two, making the story more more attractive. A great introduction to one of Zoro’s most intriguing opponents in One Piece. Although fans have only been privy to Ryuma’s journey so far, his character has certainly captivated many with his adorable personality, which will hopefully culminate when he returns as part of a full series, especially now. Monster has been confirmed as canon.
