Professor Yoneda despises the “creature” of God, and he doesn’t want anyone to replace it – so he’s going to do something about it.
Kodoani.com – WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Platinum End episode 21“The Time For Talk”
The Battle Royale is over, replaced by a Death Note-style mind battle, and Mirai has no chance in an academic debate with the famous but troubled Professor Yoneda. In a way, Professor Yoneda is the new Metropoliman, especially where it comes to his grim views of God.
Yoneda and Mirai argue about what God even is and what God’s role is for humanity. While Mirai hopes for her and humanity’s happiness with God, Yoneda claims that God must be trapped in order for humanity to progress in the future without the baggage of faith in God. This controversial idea actually received some support.
Professor Yoneda can remind Platinum End fans of the Metropoliman villain to some extent, as they have radical ideas about God and even reject traditional notions of God and faith. . However, unlike Metropoliman, who wanted to reshape humanity with class genocide, Professor Yoneda committed suicide in his own mind instead, and in Episode 21 he gains the support of at least half of the global population, including the prime minister of Japan. Metropoliman used the threat of terrorism to get what he wanted, while Professor Yoneda, a cold and calculating scholar, took a different approach. And it is working. This is a threat unlike any Mirai has ever faced, and Mirai can’t seem to beat Yoneda at her own game.
Professor Yoneda’s murder plan was for the benefit of humanity, as the professor said. He argues that humanity is restraining itself by praying and relying on the traditional concept of a God; humanity should go into the future under its own power, without a patron god holding human’s hand. To a degree, this is quite optimistic for Yoneda, who clearly has faith in the power of humanity. Then again, Yoneda’s plan to get rid of God will be a blow to the pious people who rely on faith and prayer in their lives. But Yoneda didn’t care – he believed it was a fair price to pay, and he could only see things his way. It will not be easy – and possibly impossible – for Mirai and his team to talk to Yoneda about this.
Yoneda urged the surviving God candidates and their allies to join him at the new national stadium, similar to when Metropoliman invited the candidates to join him at Jinbo baseball stadium . Yoneda claims that he just wanted to talk things out – an idea that appealed to Mirai – but it was a trap. Like Metro, Yoneda wants to slaughter every God candidate who accepts the invitation as part of her murderous plan. If no candidate of God is elected, God’s Office will default to the last man or woman standing. Yoneda, who wanted no winners at all, had a plan to prevent that, and it involved white arrows and the element of surprise.
Yoneda planned to kill Mirai, Temari, and Saki with her white arrows, then let Shujin and herself shoot each other dead at the same time. This, in theory, should lead to a draw and prevent the creation of a “creature” of God. In a way, this made Yoneda a martyr in his mind – a supposedly selfless scholar who would take his own life to set humanity on a path of self-reliance, no God in the future. However, Mirai and the group will not accept such a paradoxical ending. Mirai wants a worthy victor to succeed God, whether it’s Mirai herself or not. There must be a God to inspire people to believe, and even if God is a being, killing is not the solution. It was never like that.
