A fan built Pokemon’s Pewter City using LEGO blocks as part of a larger project to recreate the entire Kanto region.
Kodoani.com – Released in the US in 1998, Pokemon Red and Blue had a first Gym battle that one could describe as gray. Pewter City is the home of Brock, who specializes in raising Rock-type Pokemon. While Brock’s anime counterpart had a much larger role in the animated series, he was a tough opponent that players had to overcome in the original games.
In the original Pokemon games, Brock only had two Pokemon for the player to battle. They are Geodude and Onyx making the battle tough for anyone who chooses Charmander as starter or plays Pokemon Yellow. It is very difficult to spawn wild Pokemon with Brock’s rock type at that point in the game. In the anime series, Brock will eventually leave Pewter City and join Ash on his journey, although the character has left and returned to Ash several times in the Pokemon series.
In the years since the game’s original release, fans have paid tributes of their own to Brock’s home city. As part of a larger project to recreate the Kanto region in Pokemon using only LEGO, Reddit user Buscags1 has added a new update to their map. Specifically, the LEGO game now includes Pewter City.
This is just the latest in a series of posts documenting the making of LEGO Kanto. The most recent post earlier showed their recreations of Route 2 from the Pokemon games connecting Viridian City to Pewter City. The map still has a long way to go, and the next logical step would be to recreate Roadmap 3. It’s unclear how long it will take to complete the map.
LEGO tributes like these are popular in the Pokemon community. The sprite technology available to developers at the time of the game’s release was very beneficial for LEGO games. For example, one fan created an animation of the main characters Pokemon Gold and Silver using only LEGO, and it’s likely fans will create more like this in the future.
Pewter City was ultimately just a stepping stone for the player character in Pokemon Red and Blue, but it was never forgotten. For example, one artist has redrawn an entire town while hiding over 100 Pokemon in the drawing. In Pokemon Gold and Silver, the player character eventually makes it across the Kanto region and fights Brock at the city’s Gym. While the city may not be the biggest, nor is the battle with Brock the hardest, it’s one of the gamer’s memories.
