Pokémon: Why was Misty replaced and not Brock?

It seems a bit unfair that Misty had to leave the anime while Brock was allowed to continue traveling with Ash, but there are reasons for this.

When Ash left for the Hoenn region in the Pokémon Advanced Generation series, it was supposed to be a whole new beginning for him. He has new clothes, new companions, and has left all his old Pokémon behind for Pikachu. He even left Brock and Misty behind, but one of them ended up coming back.

While Misty mostly stayed at the Cerulean Gym after Ash’s adventures in Johto, Brock eventually met him again in Hoenn. He even stayed as a companion in the Sinnoh region. As for why Misty was dropped from the show while Brock was allowed to stay, that remains to be explained.

What roles do Misty and Brock need to take on?

The cosmic explanation for Misty leaving the show is that she has to. Since her sisters were busy on vacation and pursuing their own careers, they needed someone else to continue as Head of the Gym. Misty ends up getting her old job back.

However, if the screenwriters wanted to, it would be easy enough to keep Misty as Ash’s female companion. All they had to do was not keep Misty’s sisters busy with other things; they’ve managed to keep the Gym running for hundreds of episodes, so a few hundred more won’t hurt. By comparison, Brock returned home briefly, made sure everything was okay, and decided to go to Hoenn to see Ash again. Misty getting kicked out of the show will need a much bigger reason in the long run.

The real reason for Misty’s departure is probably related to May, or more specifically, her competitive career. May was introduced in the anime to give Ash a companion who would be interested in entering the Competitions and becoming the Top Coordinator; this also applies to Dawn in the Diamonds and Pearls series. Misty could have filled the role, but her real dream is to become a Water Pokémon Master. Looking at it like this, it means she’ll be heading back to her Gym while May travels with Ash.

For Brock, he might be a little too critical to let go. He is responsible for cooking meals, treating injured Pokémon, and performing other chores between towns and cities. He also offers commentary on key battles and gives insight into Ash’s mindset that neither May nor Max have. The other Gym Leaders could have filled the role, but unless they have a role that’s clearly different from Brock’s, there’s no point in excluding him from the show. That, or the area that Ash is going to next will have to be as isolated from the old areas as possible.

Misty leaving and Brock staying may seem unfair to some, but it’s an important change for the anime. The goal and purpose of these two means that they need to be in different places at different times. The fact that Brock needs to be with Ash a little longer is just the way things work out for the best both inside and outside the story.
