Warning: contains SPOILERS for Kaiju No. 8: B-Side Chapter #1With a fresh perspective on the giant monster’s apocalypse, Jump Shonen‘S Kaiju number 8 differentiates itself from typical giant monster manga by presenting humanity’s struggle against these destructive creatures from a ground-level perspective. A spin-off series titled Kaiju No. 8: Side B aims to deepen the story by revealing untold details about the characters, their origins, and the complex dynamics of their relationships, which drives the intensity of the plot main.
Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiji No. 8 takes place in a world where villainous Kaiju are a constant threat to humanity. In response, each country has established its own measures to deal with the Kaiju problem. In Japan, the government established the Self-Defense Force and tasked it with protecting the country against all threats from Kaiju.
The new spin-off, Kaiju No 8 B-Side, debuted just before the premiere of the anime Kaiju No. 8 in spring 2024, taking a step back from the perspective of protagonist Kafka Hibino. Instead, it focuses on other characters in the Self-Defense Forces, especially Soshiro Hoshina, Deputy Captain of the Self-Defense Forces’ 3rd Division and Kafka’s superior officer.
Kaiju No. 8: B-Side fills in the important details
Story by Naoya Matsumoto and Keiji Ando, art by Kentaro Hidano
The main story of Kaiju No. 8 focuses on Kafka Hibino who, as a child, made a pact with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro to join the Self-Defense Forces. However, while Mina makes good on her promise, Kafka lacks physical and mental skills and must work on a “cleanup team” that cleans up disaster sites after Kaiju battles. Everything changed the day Kafka mysteriously transformed into a Kaiju hybrid and decided to use this dangerous power to finally achieve his dream.
The strength of Kaiju No. 8 is the balance between the ongoing war between humans and Kaiju with the development of Kafka as humanity’s key weapon against the beasts. It is a fascinating story about war from the perspective of someone who – by nature – has insight into both sides of the combatants. In Kaiju No. 8, readers encounter many interesting characters, but they often get lost in the shuffle of the intense action that is the core of the story. Kaiju No. 8 B-Side solves this problem by giving secondary and minor characters a stage to tell their own backstory leading up to the events currently unfolding in Kaiju No. 8.
The spin-off will bring prominence to the supporting characters of Kaiju No. 8
Kaiju No. 8 B-Side chapter #1 focuses on how Hoshina achieved the position of Vice Captain of the Self-Defense Forces’ 3rd Division and is Kafka’s superior officer.. In telling his story, this chapter reveals how Hoshino came to know Mina and how he developed a weakness for Kafka’s lack of ability because he was also rejected for his decision to rely on swords, instead of guns, in the fight against the Kaiju.
Kaiju No. 8 is a must-read manga on its own, especially for fans of the kaiju genre. However, based on the first issue, Kaiju No. 8 B-Side will make Kaiju No. 8 a deeper and richer story by adding important background information and context to the main story as well as its engaging supporting characters. This new Shonen Jump series is the perfect manga to read ahead of the series’ anticipated launch. Kaiju number 8 cartoon.
