Dragon Ball ZThe combination of Goku and Vegeta has created extremely powerful power Vegito And Gogetaand despite countless debates online, the answer to who is stronger was long ago settled by the manga publisher itself. The Fusion Dance and Potara Earrings were both introduced near the end of Dragon Ball Z and have proven to be valuable trump cards throughout the follow-up series, Dragon Ball Super. Although both transformations have specific requirements to achieve, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of using a particular form.
Before Dragon Ball Super was even an idea, Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, responsible for publishing many beloved series, answered who was stronger between Gogeta and Vegito. A special issue was released a few months after Gogeta’s debut in Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn and shortly after the final chapter of the manga was released.

Fusing the spirits of the two strongest opponents and fusing them together, Fusion has better balance and can exert their power to the maximum!! So if it’s a short battle of 30 minutes or less then Gogeta will win, but if it’s a long battle then Vegetto will win!!
Thanks to translations provided by the Dragon Ball Kanzenshuu archive, Weekly Shonen Jump stated in issue #28 in 1995 that “…[if] If it’s a short battle lasting thirty minutes or less, then Gogeta will win, while if it’s a long battle then Vegetto will win!” While there has been more action with both characters in the Dragon Ball Super series, the outcome would likely be the same nearly thirty years after the manga’s publication answered the question once and for all.
It’s almost impossible for Vegito to defeat Gogeta, but it could go either way
Weekly Shonen Jump answered the question of who would win in a fight between Gogeta and Vegito in 1995, but some key details about Potara have changed since Dragon Ball Z aired. When Elder Kai first introduced the Potara Earrings, he led fans to believe that they created a lasting combination. However, Dragon Ball Super proved that wrong. If two mortals use the earrings, the union will only last an hour or less, depending on the warrior’s energy output. Using Potara with Kai will create a permanent fusion. Vegito’s Super Saiyan Blue form only lasts 15 minutes against Zamasu before it separated during their DBS battle because of the amount of energy the battle required against the evil immortal god.
Interestingly, the popular YouTube channel Death Battle! recently came to the opposite conclusion about who would win between Gogeta and Vegito. According to their research, which takes into account all appearances of the two characters in different media, Vegito is stronger than Gogeta due to the fusion method used, as Potara fusion does not require one to lower their power level theirs like Fusion Dance. (something Shonen Jump considers an advantage). However, Gogeta fans will be quick to point out that Whis has said that Gogeta is even stronger than Beerus, so the debate remains open.
Potara is better than Fusion Dance but the earrings are very rare
At the end of the day, many things can happen with Fusion Dance, resulting in the creation of a much less effective fighter, as Gotenks has shown many times. The Potara Earring requires less hassle than the Fusion Dance to perform for an almost identical power-up. However, since Earrings are said to be extremely rare, Fusion Dance is ultimately a better choice for most fighters in the universe.
As Weekly Shonen Jump pointed out years ago, Fusion Dance’s shorter time limit is clearly an issue, and the format has repeatedly exposed this weakness. However, although the answer from Shonen Jump seems a bit outdated today, it is interesting to see that the debate over who is stronger between Vegito And Gogeta started so many years ago and that’s the thing Dragon ball fans still haven’t resolved it.
