Sonic Frontiers continues to break records, selling 2.5 million copies worldwide in just one month, outselling the fan-favorite series.
Sonic Frontiers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
Sega has announced that Sonic Frontiers has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide following its launch last month. Fans are celebrating with the company on this important milestone for a variety of reasons, especially as the numbers show just how much players are enjoying Sonic’s latest adventure.
Sonic Frontiers sales numbers matter in many ways. It showed Sega what would happen if they allowed Sonic Team time to develop a title after a large number of the franchise’s previous releases had been rushed to completion. It paid off, as Frontiers broke the series’ sales record in the span of a month as the product resonated with series loyalists.
2.5 million copies sold in a one-month period is huge for a 3D Sonic game. Even the 25th anniversary title Sonic Generations didn’t hit that number – selling just 1.85 million copies in its first year. This makes Sonic Frontiers the series’ best-selling title for over a decade, outselling even fan-favorite Sonic Mania.
Part of this sales comes from the fact that Sonic Frontiers is currently the best-selling game in Japan, accounting for about 50,000 copies sold in the country alone if second-hand sales from Famitsu are to be believed. However, Sonic Frontiers is also discounted on Black Friday. Even though it’s only been out for a month, the title is currently on sale for $20 to promote the game as a great Christmas present. Therefore, Sonic Frontiers will most likely sell even more copies later this year.
Until the next game launches fans have a lot of DLC to look forward to in 2023.
For Sega and Sonic Team, as well as fans, this bodes well for the future of the franchise. From the very beginning, the company and the developers were public about how well they wanted Sonic Frontiers to perform in front of critics and fans. While the specific goals Sega set for Frontiers were not made clear, it’s very likely that the game performed better than the company expected.
Fans have agreed that Frontiers isn’t a perfect game, but it’s a sign of more great things to come. The director of Frontiers not only accepts fan feedback, but says they’re working towards making the next game an even better experience than Sonic Frontiers.
