The official Studio Ghibli store has just launched a kimono-style jacket inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved family film My Neighbor Totoro.
On January 26, Ghibli’s Donguri Kyowakoku online store launched the My Neighbor Totoro Handmade Style Collection — an outfit consisting of three individual pieces. According to SoraNews24, the most popular of these is the Totoro-inspired “Japanese Cardigan,” an indigo-dyed denim jacket designed to resemble a short kimono. Image of Totoro flying through the night sky with his famous umbrella adorning the background. A black soot graphic is also stitched onto the right sleeve.

Seven years after selling out, Studio Ghibli’s handmade wool coasters have made a lovely comeback
A Totoro set and its much-coveted Ghibli-themed coasters and pot mats are returning after being out of stock for the past seven years.
Although exclusive to Ghibli store members, the jacket sold out shortly after it was posted on the website. Including tax, its retail price is about 13,200 yen (about 89.42 USD). The collection also includes a denim tote bag and an “erimaki” short scarf, both emblazoned with the aforementioned Totoro design. These items are priced significantly lower than the sweaters, with the bag priced at a modest 5,280 yen ($35.76) and the scarf priced at 3,300 yen ($22). Donguri Kyowakoku reassures customers that it will restock any sold-out Artisan Collection products in April or May.
Studio Ghibli released My Neighbor Totoro in 1988 as a crossover film with the studio’s other iconic masterpiece, Grave of the Fireflies. The previous film was about two young girls named Satsuki and Mei who move to rural Japan to be closer to their hospitalized mother. The sisters are delighted with their new home, located next to an ancient forest, inhabited by many nature spirits, the largest of which the girls name Totoro. Satsuki and Mei share many magical encounters with Totoro and his companions, including the similarly iconic cat spirit known as Catbus. Since its release, the film has achieved international fame and even had a short sequel screened exclusively at the Ghibli Museum and Ghibli Park.

Totoro’s iconic status has led to dozens of high-profile collaborations with major Japanese companies. A famous distillery in Okinawa called Kumesen Shuzo used Ghibli’s furry mascot to brand its specialty product — a new rice whiskey called “ukiyo.” Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli president and co-founder Toshio Suzuki designed the Ukiyo logo, a stylized kanji character for Totoro that serves as part of the brand name. LINE, a popular social media app in Japan, also has its own line of Totoro-themed emojis, some of which were created by Suzuki himself. Additionally, Totoro regularly appears in new Ghibli store product lines, alongside similarly popular brands such as Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service.
My Neighbor Totoro, along with other Studio Ghibli films, is now available to stream on Max.
