Hayao Miyazaki is a name synonymous with the anime industry, famous for co-founding Studio Ghibli and producing some of its most beloved films. His recent return from retirement with a new film further cemented his legendary status.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki, spoke to the press before accepting the award on behalf of Studio Ghibli. He sheds light on his father's thoughts, revealing that despite his age and stature, Hayao Miyazaki still considers all animators his rivals in the field.
“Even at his age, he still considered all the other animators around him as rivals,” Goro Miyazaki shared. “It doesn't matter if they are younger than him, former employees who supported him, or animators at Ghibli or other studios. If they were animators, they were his competition.”
According to Goro Miyazaki, his father was very meticulous in his work and did not share his ideas until they were perfected. “Because they were his competition, he wouldn't talk to them about his idea until he got the details just right and he could say 'Yes, that's it!'
Although he inspired countless animators, Hayao Miyazaki remained focused on the competition. He maintains a winning streak and is determined to maintain his leading position in the industry.
The director's dedication to craft and competitive spirit continue to drive him, ensuring that his legacy and influence remain strong in the field of animation.
