From April onwards, Ghibli fans will get to enjoy a title or two from the studio's critically acclaimed film collection. In addition to Spirited Away, they include Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Castle in the Sky (1986), The Secret World of Arrietty (2010), When Marnie Was There (2014), Princess Mononoke (1997), Ponyo (2008), Whisper of theHeart (1995), The Cat Returns (2002), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Pom Poko (1994) and My Neighbor Totoro (1988).
Spirited Away is written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the creative pioneer responsible for some of Japan's most beloved animation. The film stars Chihiro, an apathetic 10-year-old girl on her way with her parents to a new house in a completely new town. Along the way, they discover an unmarked tunnel entrance that leads them to what appears to be an abandoned amusement park. After discovering stalls filled with delicious plates of food, Chihiro's parents began to eat, ignoring Chihiro's protests. After an unusual encounter with a mysterious boy, Chihiro makes a horrifying discovery: both her parents have turned into pigs. Furthermore, the “amusement park” is truly another world filled with Japanese spirit. Now alone, Chihiro must tap into her inner strength and deep courage to rescue her parents and return home.
