Naofumi Iwatani is an ordinary Otaku who spends his days immersed in games and manga. He doesn't have much ambition or interest in the world outside of his hobbies.
But his life changes completely when he is suddenly summoned to a parallel universe. In this new world, Naofumi learns that he is one of four heroes chosen to save the world from the impending apocalypse. Each hero is given a legendary weapon, and Naofumi's weapon is a shield—considered the weakest of the four weapons.
At first, Naofumi tries to carry out his new responsibilities, but things quickly take a dark turn. He was betrayed by other heroes and falsely accused.
