A brief teaser of Tekken shown at EVO 2022 shows the next battle to come for the brand, with the appearance of series protagonist Kazuya.
Tekken 7 is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Tekken 7 was released back in 2017 after spending almost two years in testing. Since then, the game has gone through several seasons and continues to update content, but the product has not received any new content since the release of the Lidia Sobieska character and the Island Paradise level on the 23rd. March 2021. During EVO 2022, an extremely brief and vague teaser was introduced, revealing that a new Tekken project is presumably in the works.
The Tekken series has been ongoing since 1994 and the longstanding fighting franchise has become one of the most popular in the genre, with Tekken 7 even featuring guest characters. from Akuma from Street Fighter, Noctis from Final Fantasy 15 and Geese Howard from King of Fighters. Now it looks like a new part of Tekken could be about to be released.
In a short trailer shown at EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, developer Bandai Namco seems to have confirmed a new part of the franchise but leaves everyone wondering if the game is the real deal. Tekken 8 or perhaps a remake or remaster. The very short trailer features the series’ protagonist Kazuya Mishima in the ending scene of the first Tekken before moving on to more modern looking graphics. The words “Get Ready” appeared on the screen as Kazuya smiled and his eyes turned red.
With such a brief trailer and no word yet from Bandai Namco, it is difficult to determine what this next Tekken project really is. The focus of the teaser is entirely on Kazuya and the video shown is from the first game in the series, possibly hinting at a remake or remaster. But when the trailer turns to modern graphics, it’s new footage. Also notable is Kazuya’s red eye, which he didn’t have until the events of Tekken 4, which could imply this new game will take place after the events of Tekken 4. Tekken 8. has been rumored to be in development since NVIDIA’s 2021 leak revealed the title’s name along with several other games that have yet to be announced.
EVO has been a wonderland of fighting game fan announcements throughout history. With other major announcements from Bandai Namco, EVO seems like the perfect place to announce the next mainline game in the Tekken franchise. With NVIDIA’s leak exposing the community to a ton of potential games in development, including Tekken 8, it looks like a trailer for the next mainline game. However, nothing has been confirmed yet, so fans will have to wait a while longer when the developer makes an official announcement.
