The director of My Dress-Up Darling, Keisuke Shinohara, discusses what makes Marin Kitagawa such a lovable and inspiring character for anime fans.
Keisuke Shinohara, director of last year’s hit movie My Dress-Up Darling, shared his thoughts on Marin Kitagawa’s popularity and love.
“As a character, she is fascinating. Marin Kitagawa is the type of character we’ve never seen before,” he told Crunchyroll in a recent interview. The story of My Dress-Up Darling follows Kitagawa, a high school student with a deep love for anime and popular culture and dreams of becoming a famous cosplayer. She teams up with Wakana Gojo, a classmate with a secret passion for Hina Doll making, and together they combine his sewing skills with her passion and drive to create Make the best outfits possible.
The director explained the charm of Marin
Shinohara continued, saying that Kitagawa’s wide-ranging appeal stems from the fact that “she respects herself as well as others, which makes her endearing. Marin isn’t afraid to speak her mind, but when it comes to romance, she can be shy, and that’s understandable to anyone in love. The gap between the way she looks on the outside and what’s going on inside of her makes her endearing. Combined with the fact that she can become completely devoted to something when she puts all her heart into it, she has the ideal qualities we look for in a person.”
The character’s respect for herself and others, as well as her passion and excitement, resonated greatly with both manga readers and anime viewers. Shinichi Fukuda’s ongoing manga series, which first appeared in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine in January 2018, has sold more than 7.5 million copies as of September 2022 and upon the CloverWorks adaptation premiered as part of the 2022 winter anime season, a lot of new people have joined the fandom.
Of course, fans of My Dress-Up Darling don’t just show their love and appreciation for the story by reading the manga or watching the anime; they follow Kitagawa and Gojo’s example and create impressive cosplays. For example, professional model Arisa Chan recreated their Shizuku cosplay, and costume production expert Anari.exe featured her wearing a Black Lobelia costume.
According to Shinohara, while the story focuses on cosplay, the fascination theme isn’t limited to just making the costumes. “What’s at the base of [My Dress-Up Darling] It’s the mindset of saying what you love, and turning a negative into a positive even when others tease you about it. I hope that message is conveyed through the anime,” he explained.
My Dress-Up Darling is available now on Crunchyroll.
