Kodoani.com – “The First Slam Dunk,” the new anime adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s basketball manga Slam Dunk, took in 130 million yen (about $881,569) in a one-day rerun on Tuesday in Japan. So far , the film sold about 10.95 million tickets with revenue of about 15.8 billion yen (about 107.14 million USD).
Re-screenings of the film took place in 107 theaters in 47 counties and were also shown in IMAX and Dolby Cinema theaters.
“The First Slam Dunk” is the 13th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, surpassing Hayao Miyazaki’s 2008 animated film “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea”, with revenue of 15.5 billion yen (about 105.8 million USD) domestically. The film is also the seventh highest-grossing anime film in Japan and tops the list of highest-grossing films of 2023 in the country. It also ranked third in terms of revenue in China and Korea in 2023.
The film opened in Japan in December 2022 and quickly ranked No. 1 in its opening weekend. Sold 847,000 tickets and earned 1,295,808,780 yen (about 9.50 million USD) in the first week. By June 2023, the film had sold more than 10 million tickets and grossed 14.43 billion yen (about 103.5 million USD) in Japan.
GKIDS released the film in the United States and Canada on July 28, grossing $662,211 in its first weekend in North America. The film won many awards, including the Animation of the Year Award at the 46th Japan Academy Film Awards. Author Takehiko Inoue personally directed and wrote the script for the film.
