A dramatic new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series, Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, highlights some of anime’s most macabre stories.
An exciting new trailer has debuted for Netflix’s upcoming animated series, Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre.
Featured on Netflix’s Geeked Twitter account, this trailer showcases some of the manga stories the series will adapt Junji Ito’s prolific work. Some of these include “Tomb Town,” “The Strange Hikizuri Siblings,” “Ice Cream Bus,” “The Thing That Drifted Ashore,” “Hanging Balloons,” Unendurable Labyrinth,” and “Library of Illusions.” Junji Ito Maniac will premiere on Netflix on January 19.
Iconic Horror Stories by Junji Ito
Junji Ito is one of the most iconic names in the Japanese horror genre, having won numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Eisner Award for Outstanding Writer/Artist Best of 2021. Of the 20 stories that Junji Ito Maniac will adapt, the following stories will appear in the new trailer. The “Strange Hikizuri Brothers” is a story in a series of short ghost stories revolving around nominal siblings. “Ice Cream Bus” revolves around a mysterious ice cream truck driver who distributes free ice cream to children and gives them a ride. “The Hanging Bubble” tells the story of a town haunted by the floating, decapitated heads of people who have just died, “Tomb Town” tells the story of a strange traffic accident that occurs out in a town full of tombstones. Intruder revolves around a man named Oshikiri who constantly hears footsteps from an unknown source upstairs of his house.
Other stories featured in the trailer include “The Thing That Drifted Ashore,” about a group of scientists who discover the rotting corpse of a giant, unidentifiable creature. Upon learning of the corpse, a young man haunted by strange dreams underwater begins to see the corpse, believing there is a connection to his dreams. “The Unbearable Maze” revolves around a couple who discover a group of self-destructive religious people living in an underground labyrinth, while “Library of Illusions” is about a book collector insanely obsessed with trying to memorize every single book in his family’s library. . “Tomie: Photo” tells the story of a beautiful but mysterious high school girl who takes revenge on a group of stalkers in her school’s photography club.
Junji Ito Maniac is not the first anime to adapt the work of the famous artist. Studio DEEN’s 12-episode series, The Junji Ito Collection, premiered on Netflix on January 5, 2018. Like Maniac, this series also adapts select stories from its bibliography. Junji Ito, including “Long Dreams,” “Long Farewell,” “Slug Girl,” “Further Tales of Oshikiri,” “Town Without Streets,” and “Blood Bubble Bush.” ” Shinobu Tagashira is directing the film, while Kaoru Sawada is writing the script.
Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre premieres on Netflix on January 19.
