Season 1, Episode 1 of The Four Sons of the Yuzuki Family, “Yuzuki’s House”, premiered on Crunchyroll on October 5, 2023 to widespread complaints about the anime’s subtitle quality. Crunchyroll temporarily took down the episode on Thursday in response.
Two staff members at Anime News Network posted about the incident on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Woof, not sure what happened here but Crunchyroll’s subtitles for The Four Sons of the Yuzuki Family are perfect Totally unprofessional. 4 out of 5 sentences have no punctuation, are too literal in translation, and are mixed with possessive words. What a mess.”
The Four Sons of the Yuzuki Family is a brand new anime adapted from the manga Yuzuki-san Chi no Yon Kyōdai, written and illustrated by Shizuki Fujisawa. The manga has been serialized in the shojo magazine Betsucomi since 2018. The story is about four brothers who lost their parents two years ago.
Four brothers – Hayato, Mikoto, Minato and Gakuto – try their best to grow up with each other’s help. Hayato works hard as a school teacher to provide for his younger siblings. Mikoto is meek and calm, Minato is active and strong, and Gakuto is wise despite being the youngest. The manga has become especially popular with fans of the shojo genre, winning the 66th Annual Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2020 in the shojo category.
The anime adaptation of Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons is being produced by Studio Shuka (91 Days) under the direction of Mitsuru Hongo (World Trigger). Orie Tanaka is the animation director and in charge of character design. Yoshikazu Suo (Talking the Pictures, Melody of Oblivion) is composing the music. The opening theme song, “Naite Iinda,” is performed by Flumpool, while the ending theme song, “Sasakure” is performed by Aoi Kubo.
As of Friday, Crunchyroll is working on fixing the subtitle error. Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons is scheduled to air in 12 episodes, releasing weekly on Thursdays with the final episode premiering on December 21, 2023.
