The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel abuses fanfare, but succeeds elsewhere

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – The first episode of Northern War builds an interesting, albeit interpretation-heavy, world.

The following contains spoilers for Episode 1 of The Legend of Heroes: Traces of Cold Steel – Northern War, “He Appears… Hero of Twilight”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – Northern War is a war-focused adventure anime based on the Trails video game series. It tells the story of Lavian Winslet, a rookie in the Northern Jaeger regiment, and her involvement in the war between the Northern State of Ambria and the Erebonian Empire. Episode 1, “He Appears… The Hero in the Twilight,” serves as an introduction to an exciting fantasy world about the effects of war and the revolutionary effort.

The combination of magic and industrial weapons feels similar to the world-building in Final Fantasy VI. It even feels similar to the introduction of Lavi, the protagonist, and her two partners Tak and Ivano, much like Final Fantasy’s Terra, Biggs, and Wedge. At first glance, Lavi appears to be a stoic, reserved and highly skilled soldier, even at the rank of a rookie. It is later revealed that she is the granddaughter of the great Hero of Ambria, Vlad Winslet, and her skills may be due to her upbringing and blood ties. It’s just one of the many plot points crammed into the first volume.

The problem with too many explanations

When introducing a new world, it’s important to establish some of the elements that make up the setting and theme for the audience to follow. Too little, the audience won’t understand what is really going on, conversely, too much, the audience can become confused with who, what and why. After a brief hint about Lavi being hurt as a child by conflict, the story quickly shifts to the present. This brief description of the trait is perfect for setting up the hero’s backstory to explore later. However, the first half of the episode quickly turns to a lengthy explanatory scene.

In a discussion between two characters, Tak and Ivano, the entire history of the Northern Jaegers, radical heroes striving for greatness, the number of soldiers in several regions and regiments, one series of names and conflicts, all mentioned in passing. This is associated with soldiers fighting against monsters. Implicit information, such as why such a large group of soldiers is protecting supposed civilian supplies, along with a glimpse inside one of the vehicles, is what really matters. in the scene. However, with so many presentations piled up, getting started is difficult and overwhelming.

Streamline plot points that aid in storytelling

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel suffers from the age-old narrative saying, “show, don’t tell.” However, when it comes to creating a world that many people may not be familiar with, the first episode can take some time. There are some points of information that are not necessary in the first half, and some that can easily be revealed through visual means or over time. The world is exciting and beautiful, with its ability to strive to be a great character-driven experience, and its history is an important factor in what is happening in the present, a almost cyclical themes of history. The second half of the episode brilliantly offers a moment of respite, then builds a sense of genuine curiosity and tension through Lavi and Rogan’s interactions — subtle, yet powerful.

Even with so much information cramped in the first episode, the world’s baseline was already established. The world that Lavi lives in is a world of conflict between humans and monsters, and although monsters are certainly a threat, the main focus of the story is between nations. With so many worlds being explored quickly, it’s important to spend more time with the characters as the story progresses, helping the audience connect with Lavi, hopefully revealing her past and motivations. through the story.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – Northern War is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
