After the news of winning the lottery was spread, Mr. Anoop was repeatedly asked by strangers to ask for money.
A rickshaw driver named Anoop (32 years old), from the southern Indian state of Kerala won 250 million rupees (~ 77 billion VND) by buying a jackpot ticket in a local lottery on May 18. 9.
But the joy did not last long for Anoop and his family, including his mother, wife Maya and children.
Recently, Anoop posted a video asking strangers to stay away from his family and stop looking for him for money. Anoop also said he had to move houses repeatedly to escape harassment.
The news sites went to his current home in Sreevaraham, Thiruvanathapuram for interviews. Anoop complains:
“I wish I hadn’t won. Winning third is probably better. At first I was very happy when people came and brought cameras to my house.”
Anoop has been buying lottery tickets for years, but before that he only won small prizes. But when he won the jackpot, his life was turned upside down beyond control:
“I lost all my peace and couldn’t even stay in my house when I was surrounded by people calling and making me fulfill their demands just because I won the first prize. Now I have to constantly change places. I went to stay at my sister’s house, but the address was released. Now I have to make this video because my kids are showing signs of being unwell.”
While speaking in front of the camera, Anoop pointed out the people knocking on his door.
Anoop said he originally intended to come to Malaysia to work as a chef. However, exactly 1 day before departure, he received the winning news. So far, he has not received the money, but the people who came to ask for money have surrounded his house.
“I can’t leave the house, can’t go anywhere. My child is sick and I can’t take him to the doctor. All I can tell them is that I haven’t received the money, no one understands me no matter how many times I say it.”
Maya, Anoop’s wife, said that people from all over India had flocked to the couple’s home to ask for money.
Even Anoop’s old neighbors and friends now have an attitude towards him, as his winning the lottery affects the peace of the village:
“My neighbors are angry because many people come looking for me around the neighborhood. Even when I wear a mask, people still surround me because they know I’m the winner.”
The Kerala state government said it would provide a quick training course on financial management after Anoop received 150 million rupees (after taxes).
