A Chinese director has captivated Pokémon fans with a short film that introduces another aspect of the franchise’s universe.
A French news platform called Catsuka recently took notice of an unofficial animated short film called Pokemon – Dreaming of Good Times, created to celebrate the beginning of the new year Lunar New Year 2024. While official releases of the franchise often chronicle the lives of Pokémon trainers, this two-minute film, seen below, follows the lives of ordinary people as they doing things like going to work, hanging out with friends, and getting stuck in traffic on the way home—all while accompanied by their Pokémon. The film ends with a Pokémon-themed New Year’s Eve celebration and a shot of the legendary dragon Rayquaza flying into the night sky. Catsuka is currently showing this short film on its official YouTube channel.

Space Jam meets Pokémon in a new legacy cut scene
A deleted scene from Space Jam: A New Legacy reveals that LeBron James and Bugs Bunny originally traveled to the Pokémon anime world.
The short was produced by MTJJ/HMCM, the studio behind the 2019 animated fantasy film The Legend of Hei. Director DaiWei is perhaps best known for his animated web series All Saints Street, which chronicles the misadventures of a kind-hearted demon named Neil who tries to live a peaceful life in the human world. with his best friend, a vampire named Ira. However, Neil must also fight to maintain control of his hidden demonic powers, which at times threaten to overwhelm him. The show is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
Daiwei’s short impressed the Pokémon community, who were happy to see a more realistic depiction of the franchise. A significant number of comments describe a hunger for Pokémon content that focuses on ordinary people and how they interact with Pokémon in everyday life. “I love things like this,” one YouTube user wrote, “Just hanging out, doing normal stuff with Pokémon. If I were in the Pokémon world, I don’t think I would become a trainer. I will do it.” Just vibing with my Pokémon and doing fun things together.”

Additionally, fans seem to want a more complete version of the Pokémon universe as a whole. Since each anime entry focuses almost exclusively on combat, the dynamics of daily life are often overlooked or ignored entirely. “We need more Pokémon content like this,” one person wrote. “Just simple world building. Let’s see what life is like in the world of Pokémon beyond fighting and competing.” Fan suggestions even extend beyond the realm of fantasy to encapsulate other major genres. Another wrote: “Imagine a bank robbery movie, a spy action movie or a sports comedy, which just happens to take place in the world of Pokémon.”
The Pokémon Company seems to have grasped what fans have been asking for. In 2020, the franchise introduced Pokétoon — a series of short web animations highlighting encounters between humans and Pokémon that dramatically change their lives. Most of these short films focus on themes other than fighting. Last year, the franchise also teamed up with Netflix to release the hugely successful Pokémon Concierge, a series about a girl named Haru who begins living and working at a Pokémon resort. Instead of fighting, visitors and their Pokémon spend time playing and relaxing — a clear departure from Pokémon’s usual combat-focused content.
