Mononoke is a modern avant-garde classic anime
Toei’s Mononoke was originally released in 2007. Although the name may recall the classic Hayao Miyazaki film Princess Mononoke, it is actually a spin-off of the Aykashi: Samurai Horror Tales series. The pilot stories have the Medicine Seller confronting and fighting various ayakashi spirits. The series is notably written by Chiaki J. Konaka (also known for other creative works such as Serial Experiments Lain, the noir mecha series The Big O, and the vampire action/horror film Hellsing.
Kenji Nakamura is the series’ showrunner and he previously worked on The Big O and Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. Despite being released over a decade ago, Mononoke continues to be a well-received, timeless classic.
