One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda was influenced by famous Western titles, such as Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, among many other classic films.
One of Oda’s first interviews with Comickers in 1998 delved into his influences, which included many Western films. “I love movies. I love Western movies, and there’s a movie called ‘Young Guns’, [directed by Christopher Cain] And that was at the top of my list. It’s great. I think I was in high school when I first saw it. But that’s why I drew ‘WANTED!’ right away. Other sources of inspiration were Tarantino’s. I like ‘Pulp novels.’ Also, walking around wearing clothes from ‘Reservoir Dogs’—that’s also super cool, right?”

WANT! refers to Oda’s anthology including the manga Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation, which was adapted into an anime on Netflix last month. Recently VIZ also announced that the entire WANTED! the series will receive an official English translation for the first time. The influence of Reservoir Dogs can be seen most clearly with the character Sanji from One Piece, whom Oda admitted in SBS Volume 69 that he was inspired by his role as Mr. Pink by Steve Buscemi. Perhaps unrelated, One Piece also has a very masculine Señor Pink, introduced in the “Dressrosa” arc.
Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball and Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaa also inspired Oda
In addition to Western works, Oda also lists inspirations that many fans will know and be surprised by. Dragon Ball’s Akira Toriyama is the creator’s biggest influence. Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä is the main reason why Oda doesn’t kill off the One Piece characters. However, the inspiration between Japan and the West comes from both sides. The anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man is filled with film references, reflecting creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s deep love for the medium, while recent films like the Spider-Verse titles reference to characters like Akira, Sailor Moon, and Ghibli in their designs.
