Summary
Yamoshi's rebellion created the legend of the Super Saiyan God. A spin-off could explore Yamoshi's adventures and deepen Dragon Ball lore. Yamoshi's story is fertile ground for prequels about early Saiyan history.
The story of Dragon ballDragon Ball's first Super Saiyan isn't widely known, but it's an interesting one that could make for great fodder for a Dragon Ball spinoff/prequel series. Although somewhat explained in the series, Akira Toriyama once revealed the short version of the story in an interview, showing that he had given some thought to how the Super Saiyan first appeared.
The man who originally started the legend of the Legendary Super Saiyan was a kind-hearted Saiyan named Yamoshi. Disgusted with the brutal actions of his Saiyan brethren, Yamoshi launched a rebellion with five of his closest allies, hoping to stop the crimes being committed by their kind. Yamoshi was extremely talented and extremely strong, despite his gentle heart, and while he and his allies were ultimately defeated, Yamoshi went down in history as the legendary Super Saiyan. violent.
The short version of the story is already quite interesting, but this idea is fertile ground for a spin-off if Dragon Ball wants to do such a thing.
A Yamoshi spin-off could shed light on Saiyan history
Yamoshi's Rebellion makes excellent prequel hook
Although rare, Dragon Ball has previously made spin-offs without Goku, especially those involving his father, Bardock. Bardock is a character with a tragic fate, much like Yamoshi; No matter what he accomplishes on screen, he still has to die to stay true to the canon. As such, a Yamoshi spin-off could have much of the same appeal as the Bardock stories: some great action starring a Saiyan character other than Goku. Yamoshi is said to have lived 1,000 years ago, thus revealing for the first time a new era of Dragon Ball history and showing what the early Saiyans were like.
However, Yamoshi's story did not end when he died. In an interview from Saikyo Jump, translated by Kanzenshuu, Toriyama said that Yamoshi's soul began wandering the universe after his defeat, starting the legend of the Super Saiyan God. He searches for six righteous Saiyans, like him and his teammates, who can combine their powers and create Super Saiyan God, which eventually turns out to be Goku and friends. This way, such a prequel could still tie into the main series, setting up the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie and the corresponding anime/manga arcs.
We even get to see how Yamoshi learned about Super Saiyan God, which he may have learned after death, how Goku learned Super Saiyan 3. An adventure through Dragon's wild afterlife Ball is always a treat, and that can be especially true for a new character like Yamoshi. It will provide the opportunity for many familiar faces from Otherworld to make cameos.
A Dragon Ball spin-off starring the original Super Saiyan Yamoshi certainly has the chance to be quite interesting, revealing some details that were glossed over in the brief telling of his story that many of the characters different and Toriyama himself told it. It will provide an opportunity to dig deep Dragon ballGoku's lore, and could be enjoyed as special works focusing on Bardock, Goku's father, if given the chance. While such a spin-off seems unlikely, fans can always dream about Yamoshi's exploits.
