An anime adaptation of the Tohai manga – Ura Rate Mahjong Tohai Roku was announced with a premiere date of 2024. Teaser images and trailers were released as part of the announcement:
EAST FISH STUDIO (Fragtime, Ten Count, A Condition Called Love) will produce an animation adaptation under the direction of Jun Hatori. Mariko Kunisawa is writing the series, Sayaka Anesaki is designing the characters, while Yusuke Shirato and Yuki Kishida are composing the music.
The anime will be adapted from the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Koji Shinasaka. It was originally published in Young Champion magazine published by AKITASHOTEN’s Young Champion imprint. The first series was published from June 2006 to April 2011, followed by the follow-up manga, Tohai: Hitobashira-hen from May 2011 to May 2017. Meanwhile, the third series, Tohai: Minagoroshi-hen, was serialized from September 2017 to June 2021. The latest part, Tohai: Cold Girl, has been serialized in Young Champion since September 2021.
The film follows Kei, also known as “K of Ice”, a high school boy who frequents an underground mahjong parlor rife with money, women, black market organs, and lust. Despite facing various difficulties, Kei survives in the underground world of mahjong.
