Tokyo Revengers is finally back for a second season, and protagonist Takemichi Hanagaki has two new quests to complete.
The following contains spoilers for Tokyo Revengers Season 2, Episode 1, “It Is What It Is,” currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
Tokyo Revengers tells the story of Takemichi Hanagaki, a twenty-year-old man lost in life. He had a colorful childhood filled with gang wars and crime, but he eventually walked the right path while growing up. However, awakening the special ability to return to the past causes him to make two decisions in his life. He teams up with his longtime lover’s brother and goes back in time to change the course of history, hoping to save his beloved in the process.
After more than a year of waiting, the second season of the highly acclaimed juvenile crime anime Tokyo Revengers has finally arrived. Season 2 is said to consist of 13 volumes, including the “Christmas Showdown” part of the manga. It begins by showing its protagonist failing to complete his previous mission and being nearly killed by Kisaki Tetta. Realizing his mistake, he returns to the past with a new mission to complete.
Takemichi finds out who the real bad guy of Tokyo Revengers is
Part 2 of Tokyo Revengers begins with Kisaki pointing a gun at Takemichi’s head after having dealt with the protagonist’s teammate, Chifuyu. Fortunately, Takemichi was saved by Kazutora, who was also kind enough to give him first aid. After beating him badly, Kazutora brought him back to the present with what was going on between him and Chifuyu. It turned out that Chifuyu was quite unhappy with what the Tokyo Manji Gang had become. He finds a way to work with Kazutora to bring Toman back to his former self, and then he agrees. Unfortunately, Kisaki arrives to see Chifuyu before they accomplish anything.
Kazutora brings Takemichi to an ally they supposedly made – Hinata’s brother, Naoto. However, the encounter turns out to be a stinging operation and Naoto arrests Takemichi for inciting the murder. When they are alone, Naoto tells Takemichi about the events that have happened in the past 12 years.
It turns out that Kisaki was toying with him, trapping him to instigate Hinata’s death. Naoto theorizes that Kisaki has some obsession with Takemichi and Hinata. However, before they can form a workable plan, Takemichi must return to the past as he is about to be sent to the detention center.
Takemichi currently has two quests to complete
The main reason Takemichi keeps going back to the past is to change the future where his beloved Hinata was murdered, and that remains true up to his current timeline. This time, however, he has a clearer goal. He no longer has to pursue an abstract goal like reforming the Tokyo Manji gang; His mission now is to take care of Kisaki Tetta in one way or another, hoping to find out why the villain is so attached to him. But even though his new mission no longer revolves around the gang, Takemichi is too invested in it to simply let it sink into oblivion.
Since Kazutora informed him of the cause of the gang’s downfall, Takemichi must now stop these elements from contaminating Toman. Not surprisingly, one of the reasons is Kisaki, which overlaps with Takemichi’s second mission: the BLACK DRAGON’s money-making power. Takemichi only worked with a single target in his previous leap. This is his first time taking on two missions at once, making Tokyo Revergers fans curious to see how he plans to complete both missions while Season 2 is underway.
