Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #248 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Summary
Yuji’s unwavering determination sets him apart from other shounen protagonists, surprising even Sukuna. Yuji has experienced great loss and trauma but his spirit remains strong in the face of adversity. Sukuna’s admiration for Yuji’s willpower is significant, as Sukuna understands Yuji better than anyone else.
Can be controversial like Yujias the main character of Jujutsu Kaisen maybe, the battle with Sukuna may have just been proven accurate what makes Yuji truly unique and unlike any other shonen protagonist. The latest chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen finally see Yuji take the spotlight and the battle highlights his unbreakable determination like never before.
Besides revealing that Yuji learned the Reverse Curse Technique, chapter #248 of Jujutsu Kaisen also shows Sukuna’s surprise at Yuji’s willpower. While not giving up is a classic trait found in many shounen characters, Jujutsu Kaisen’s Yuji doesn’t give up one step further, His spirit is truly “unbreakable.” as Sukuna notes, even after all he’s been through throughout the series.
Despite the sheer difference in strength, Yuji did not back down in his fight against Sukuna, instead surprising Sukuna on multiple occasions. His unbreakable determination is all the more surprising considering how much the series has tested Yuji both in the Shibuya Arc and the current battle.

Yuji’s steadfast stance towards Sukuna in the latest chapters is especially impressive considering the amount of mental torment Yuji went through and the deaths he had to witness, most of which were caused by Sukuna . The Shibuya Arc in particular pushed Yuji’s spirit to the limit with the deaths of Nobara and Nanami, both of which left a lasting impact on Yuji. The current battle in Shinjuku isn’t much better, as Yuji doesn’t have time to process the death of Gojo, the person closest to his teacher and father figure.
The fate of his only remaining friend, Megumi, is also in the balance since becoming Sukuna’s new vessel, as chapter #248 reveals that his plan to save him with the Executioner’s Sword also failed . What’s interesting, however, is that when Sukuna takes a break during the battle to analyze his current opponent, he realizes what Yuji’s “ideal” is. The choice of words is important, because ideals are what define a hero, especially main characters in manga and anime, who are often described by the single goal they possess.

No other Shonen protagonist is as tested as Yuji
It’s safe to say that No other main character loses as much as Yuji was and still is strong in the face of it all. Not giving up on their dreams becomes much easier for other shōnen protagonists like Deku from My Hero Academia, or even Naruto, because they have never had their determination trampled on and crushed. over and over again, especially in such a traumatic way. An excellent early example of such an event in Jujutsu Kaisen is Junpei’s death, which is the first instance of Yuji truly realizing the reality of his curses and circumstances. Yuji has constantly had to face his weaknesses, which makes his bravery even more impressive.
Having lived so long, surprising Sukuna was certainly a feat that only a select few could achieve. As Sukuna himself revealed in the latest chapter, he has met many men with such ideals in his life, but none had sincere determination like Yuji’s, which not only surprised him but also made him uncomfortable on a deep level. In fact, coexisting in the same body, perhaps no one else understands Yuji better, which speaks to Yuji’s determination.
Overall, Yuji is finally starting to prove himself as the main protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, and while it’s a shame it took this long, the rewards from his match with Sukuna were definitely worth the wait. Yuji’s performances continue to subvert expectations with each new chapter Jujutsu Kaisen and will hopefully continue to do so until the end of the series.
