A Dragon Ball Super fan has pointed out a potentially misleading translation in the manga’s latest chapter, which notes Gohan’s role in defeating Cell Max.
Dragon Ball Super fans have a reason to be more excited as the manga has surpassed the plot of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The manga faithfully adapted the main story beats of the 2022 film, culminating in the defeat of Cell Max and the destruction of the Red Ribbon army. That final skirmish also involves fan-favorite Dragon Ball protagonists led by Piccolo and Gohan, who were the first to storm the Red Ribbon base in the film. Chapter 101 of the Dragon Ball Super manga mentions this event, but a user on X (formerly Twitter) noticed shortcomings in its English translation.
Dragon Ball’s Battle Hour Reveals New Daima Recap Before Special Panel
The highly anticipated Dragon Ball Daima anime receives a new synopsis and further teases ahead of the upcoming Battle Hour 2024 event.
User @SupaChronicles points out a potentially misleading translation on page 35 of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 101, where a panel describes Whis as bringing Beerus up to speed with Gohan’s true potential by revealing the connection his role in defeating Cell Max. VIZ Media’s English translation reads: “It’s actually Goku’s Boy Gohan, along with Piccolo the Namekian [who defeated Cell Max]. They led the victorious charge against the monster.” The translated text seems fairly accurate from the start, but @SupaChronicles makes valid points about how this is also potentially misleading.
Confusing puns in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 101
“…Another missing translation,” the user wrote on X. “Not a huge one, but still possibly an important one. Whis includes ‘others’ in his statement, along with Gohan and Piccolo, but VIZ English omits the ‘others’ attack and makes the dialogue seem like it’s just Piccolo and Gohan looking to defeat Cell Max when in reality it was ALL THEIR COMBINED EFFORTS.” Other users have commented that the translation is either serviceable or out of context. @SupaChronicles claims the Spanish translation of this table is more accurate. One user also said that “the remaining main characters” were implied in the statement, as Gohan and Piccolo led the attack.

Semantic translation has always been a common concern in localized content, as shown by a similar debate among One Piece fans. Brief instructions can only go so far in translating nuances between languages, and the quality of the result often depends on the translator’s command of the language and cultural context. Anime and manga fans act as crowdsourced consultants in this regard—something that ultimately benefits the industry whether translations are based on consensus or dispute. heated discussion.
