Webtoon Cheese in the Trap will make an excellent Josei series

There are many manga on WEBTOON that fit the manga demographic and are more like a traditional manga or anime series. For example, there are many romantic webtoons that revolve around high school students and have art styles similar to popular shojo stories like Blue Spring Ride.

The same goes for manhwa. Cheese in the Trap, for example, is a manhwa manga that tells the story of Seol Hong, a third-year university student in Korea. On the surface, Seol seems like any other normal college student and for the most part — until her life gets in trouble with Jung Yoo. Keep reading to find out why Cheese in the Trap makes for such a great josei series.

Cheese in the Trap focuses on real relationships

Since the josei demographic primarily caters to adult women, Cheese in the Trap almost perfectly fits the bill as it follows the life of a college student. But, this isn’t the only reason Cheese in the Trap would make a great josei. Many josei series focus on realism and less idealized depictions of romances told by mindless heroines — romantic relationships are more realistic and less uplifting. more illusory as they progress. The cast of characters covers a wide range of ages and the story also weaves between present and flashback to tell the story. While this isn’t unique to josei, it does make Cheese in the Trap easier to understand.

Setting the bar for realistic and intense relationships is something Cheese in the Trap does really well — even though some of the characters’ motives may seem odd or bizarre at first. Likewise, the personalities of some of the characters are obvious from the start and rarely change throughout the series. For example, In-ha Baek is a self-centered and empowered woman; she starts that way and barely changes as the series goes on. That’s not to say In-ha’s character hasn’t changed at all, she actually started going to therapy sessions towards the end of the series.

Other characters, like In-ha’s brother In-ho Baek, go through excellent character development. At first, In-ho was independent and rude, and this hasn’t really changed. However, after meeting Seol and repeatedly getting entangled in her affairs — and saving her more times than he can count — In-ho gets a little better, and he learns to appreciate improve his piano playing ability again.

Cheese in the Trap excellently shows the real relationship between people. Seol has a trusting relationship with her younger brother, Joon, and fights him sensibly. However, the Hong siblings are quite close to each other like actual siblings in most of the movies. Although Joon doesn’t appear much until later in the series, he still has an impact on Seol’s life and somewhat helps her grow as the story’s heroine.

The main trio has an interesting dynamic

The main characters of Cheese in the Trap. Character names from left: In-ho, Seol and Jung.

Cheese in the Trap consists of three main characters: the female lead Seol, the first male lead, Jung, and the second male, In-ho. From the very beginning, Cheese in the Trap’s characters are complex. And so is the story they tell. Sometimes, a character’s motives or reasoning may not make sense to the reader, even after the explanation in the story has been given. Also, the main trio doesn’t always get along, especially Jung and In-ho. However, this only adds to Cheese in the Trap’s gripping story of college life and real-life relationships.

Jung Yoo is a great example of a character whose motivations don’t always make sense. As the story begins, the reader will have a clear picture of the character Jung; he is liked by his classmates mainly because he is rich and often offers to pay when going out in groups, but there are some people who really want to be his friends. He is also very nice, which is often commented on by many of his classmates, but the girls in his major also think he is very handsome. On the surface, he seems like a perfect person; He’s smart, good-looking, and he’s well off — he obviously has a lot going for him.

Seol was one of the first characters to see through Jung’s appearance, even if she didn’t understand what she was seeing. Before starting the story, Seol had a few encounters with Jung that made her a little uncomfortable around him, and the strangest thing was that Jung knew this. As Seol and Jung become closer and start dating, Seol learns more about Jung, including how attractive he is. He knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to get it, even if he has to take advantage of others to achieve his goals. This creates an interesting dynamic between the two, as Jung’s hidden side is gradually revealed throughout the story.

In-ho is the complete opposite of Jung, he’s rude, doesn’t study well and is usually the “punch first and ask later” type. He plays bad boy in most of the movies. Like Jung, In-ho is equally complex, possibly even more complicated if fans analyze him deeply enough.
