A new Code Geass anime series was announced in 2020, but fans expecting to get as much as the updated release date have been neglected ever since.
Code Geass was a hugely popular anime of the late 2000s, with its popularity signaling a growing renaissance of anime worldwide. Much of this can be attributed to the combination of anime mecha, military fiction, and psychological thrillers, which makes the series quite unique. Since then, it has had several new installments and sequels, although a specific sequel has yet to come to light.
Code Geass: Z of the Recapture was announced years ago, but it has yet to be turned into an actual series. News of the supposed anime coming out is scant, leading many to question whether it really exists. Here’s what fans should know about what’s been revealed so far – and if this aligns with actually being able to watch a new chapter in the world of Code Geass.
The plot and other elements of Recapture’s Z are still unknown
The plot introduced for Z of the Recapture takes place after the events of Code Geass Lelouch of the Re;surrection. The film itself is a sequel to a compilation film that recounts the events of the chapter, effectively creating an alternate timeline. This ongoing location is the only thing known about Code Geass: Z of the Recapture, as other details are yet to be revealed. Fan theories include Lelouch and CC traveling to stop the evil Geass users, somewhat reversing the premise of the series so far. Another possibility is that the show will have less of a third season than previous episodes and more spin-offs that actually focus on a new protagonist.
The chapter was announced on December 5, 2020, which coincides with the fictional birthday of the main character Lelouch in the series. It’s not a mere anniversary, either, with the “reveal” of the new film part of a tentative 10-year plan for the franchise. Yoshimitsu Ohashi, who previously worked on the franchise, was appointed as the director, with acclaimed studio Sunrise handling the production. While this little bit of information isn’t much to go on, it was announced at the time to be on track for a 2021 release date, which clearly didn’t materialize.
Some fans doubt that Code Geass: Z of the Recapture will be released
After years without any new information, let alone Z of the Recapture being released, some fans have questioned the authenticity of the project. Chances are, with the series’ announcement in 2020, that the still-unforeseen impact of COVID-19 on the anime industry is a major setback for the series. However, given the amount of time that has passed, this is a bit unlikely. That’s especially the case as the anime delay due to COVID-19 has made the status official, with recent chapters like Uncle from Another World notably getting pushed back. This makes it increasingly difficult to assess the current status of the program.
Code Geass: Z of the Recapture has had an announcement revealed by reputable source Crunchyroll, a streaming service that also hosts the franchise to date. Therefore, it is difficult to dismiss the new chapter that is said to be just a false rumor. At the same time, it looks like the series won’t be set for a release date any time soon, let alone be made. Aside from the 4D re-release of Lelouch of the Re;surrection, there’s been no real action for the entire franchise, meaning the latest film could be the final addition. Even if fans hope to see some progress made in 2023, the reality is that the once venerable Code Geass series is probably dead on hold, at least for the foreseeable future.
