May’s introduction as someone with little interest in Pokémon is an odd storytelling choice, but it’s necessary for the role she’s meant to take on.
May is an interesting addition to the Pokémon anime. Not only does she replace Misty, Ash’s longtime female companion, but also plays a more active role in the overall plot of the Advanced Generation. However, this can be hard to imagine considering her initial feelings about Pokémon.
At first, May had no particular interest in catching or raising Pokémon. She just used being a Coach as an excuse to leave the house and see the world. When someone brought up the subject of a challenge to the Alliance, she would avoid giving straight answers. It’s one thing for a character today to dislike Pokémon, but giving that trait to the protagonist is a bold move.
What narrative purpose might not like a Pokémon at first serve?
What initially made May’s disinterest in Pokémon particularly risky was her position in the franchise at the time. Misty is one of the main characters of the series and, therefore, one of the most beloved characters. Whoever replaces her must be at least as charming, likable, and purposeful as she is. In this context, May openly declares to the audience that she doesn’t like Pokémon that can easily make a bad first impression.
Fortunately, the way May was portrayed at the start of the Advanced Generation left plenty of room for fans to get to know her. She may not be as passionate about Pokémon as others, but she’s still likable in other ways and willing to give Pokémon a chance. Because of this Pokémon approach, she may be more liked as someone with a budding curiosity about Pokémon than as an obnoxious parasite.
Being able to learn to like Pokémon has made her beloved by audiences in two ways. First, it makes her an Expy for audiences who are just starting out in Pokémon and don’t have as many years of experience as others might have. With May, they have a character to relate to and can learn about the wonderful world of Pokémon at her own pace.
For those who already love Pokémon, watching May’s interest grow is like watching newer viewers join the fandom. Like when someone introduces a friend or family member to their favorite cartoon in hopes of seeing their reaction; it provides the first sight of someone getting excited about something. It also welcomes the potential for a fresh perspective.
What is possibly the most favorite thing about Pokémon?
As it turns out, May has taken a fresh approach to the Pokémon world. While Ash was fighting and Brock wanted to be a Breeder, May’s passion for Pokémon blossomed in the Competitions. She will be fighting Pokémon, but her main focus is to put on a beautiful display of her Pokémon to wow the audience. One could certainly argue that her goal of becoming a Top Coordinator is a good one to replace Misty’s goal of becoming a Water Pokémon Master.
At first, May’s dislike of Pokémon might seem like an annoying step down for Misty, but it’s necessary for her character. The writers needed someone with a new approach to Pokémon to welcome newer audiences and introduce older audiences to the Contest concept. Considering the number of fans May currently have, it’s safe to say that this gamble with her character has paid off wonderfully.
