The combination of Yamcha and Chiaotzu in “That Time I Got Reincarnated As Yamcha” is definitely Dragon Ball’s strangest combination. The union between Yamcha and Chiaotzu was made possible through special rings created by Bulma. Despite their attempts to merge, Yamcha and Chiaotzu ultimately decided not to fight in their merged forms due to their ridiculous appearances.
The concept of fusion is a favorite among Dragon ball fans, with countless possible combinations between the characters, but one of the least likely to actually appear in official Dragon Ball media. Of course, that’s the pairing of Yamcha and Chiaotzu in That Time I Got Reincarnated As Yamcha.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As Yamcha by Dragongarow LEE is a spinoff manga officially released through Shonen Jump’s online service, running from late 2016 to 2017. The story is about a child who seems to come from another world. The real world is reborn as Yamcha, Isekai. style, into the Dragon Ball universe. New Yamcha uses his encyclopedic knowledge of Dragon Ball to gain all kinds of powers that Yamcha has never received and one of them involves learning Fusion Dance.
Discovering another person has been reincarnated into this universe as Chiaotzu, they eventually unite to combine their powers in an additional scene of the small chapter that appears to be exclusive to the collected volume, titled titled “Special Plan of the Reincarnated Ones”.
The combination of Yamcha and Chiaotzu is definitely the strangest thing in Dragon Ball
The fused Yamcha and Chiaotzu, never given their own names (Yamzu or Chiaochu), were created shortly before the Cell Games began, with the intention of using their new merged powers to fight Cell. Normally, fusion would require two fighters of comparable power levels and similar sizes, but Yamcha and Chiaotzu can use special rings made by Bulma to facilitate union between people of different statuses. However, when the combined creature caught a glimpse of what they looked like together, the pair found themselves too ridiculous to fight in this state and eventually had to appease.
Of course, in the main series, neither Yamcha nor Chiaotzu ever participated in the merge, and if the results here are any indication, they have every right not to try. By the time the combination was first used in Dragon Ball Z, Yamcha and Chiaotzu were so far behind other characters that it was impossible to even consider it with anyone else. It was the fear of falling behind that prompted them to try to merge in the first place, but the fact of the matter is that after all the power-ups he’s amassed, this reincarnated Yamcha is close his maximum power level. Even with every advantage in his favor, Yamcha will never be able to keep up with Goku, and the fusion won’t change that.
Yamcha Isekai is an entertaining story for Dragon Ball fans
That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha clearly capitalized on the recent isekai trend, but it’s still a great book for dedicated Dragon Ball fans, taking the fact that fans make fun of Yamcha and running Follow it to create a fun and interesting story. The fusion is one of the strangest and most notable, but there are many more, like Yamcha traveling to Planet Namek to have his potential unlocked by the Guru. Yamcha can be ridiculed as one of the most useless characters in the main plot of Dragon ballbut this spin-off comic vindicates the maligned hero, all with the right dose of humor, highlighted by the strangest crossover in the series.
