Dubu .’s dual role
Dubu, also known as Jang Sung-Rak, is not only the artist for the webcomic adaptation of Solo Leveling but also the CEO of REDICE Studio. He worked on the adaptation from March 2018 to December 2021. On July 23, 2022, REDICE Studio announced Dubu had passed away from a brain hemorrhage due to a chronic illness.
Based on the very popular web novel by Chugong, Solo Leveling focuses on the weakest hunter in the world, Sung Jinwoo. In order to provide for his family when his father mysteriously disappeared, Jin-Woo started working as a Hunter even though he was often seriously injured . One day, he participates in a raid on a D-Rank dungeon only to realize that there is a hidden and much more dangerous second dungeon. Jinwoo managed to survive the encounter, which resulted in the System choosing him as a Player. Upon becoming a Player, Jinwoo had the ability to become stronger and ‘level up’ without any limits. From the weakest hunter in the world to the strongest, Jin-Woo must now use his newfound strength to stop countless monsters from destroying the world.

A-1 Pictures has announced that the studio will be adapting Solo Leveling into an anime, with Shunsuke Nakashige directing and Noboru Kimura writing the script and Hiroyuki Sawano writing. Dubu released a statement shortly after, expressing his excitement and expectations for the anime. “It feels like just yesterday we received an offer for an anime adaptation,” he said. “I feel so overwhelmed to think that anime is actually being made right now. It’s all thanks to you, the fans who have loved and supported Solo Leveling. I am extremely grateful. Thank you very much.”
The webcomic ends with 179 chapters on December 29, 2021. At the end of the series, Dubu thanks his assistants, Chugong, and the readers. He leaves to his readers, “Life is an endless quest where you have to level up constantly: sometimes alone, sometimes with company. So I want to wish all my readers good luck on their remaining journey! Thank you for showing Solo San with so much love. Until next time!”
