When The Witch From Mercury started, it seemed like Delling would be the main antagonist of the series, but that role has become much more unpredictable.
When it comes to the Mobile Suit Gundam anime, it can be difficult to figure out who the root is. As the film continues to develop, it becomes clear that both main sides of the conflict have moral shortcomings. The Witch from Mercury is no different in this regard.
At the end of Season 1, the line between good and evil becomes especially blurred. What many think of as allies turns out to be adversaries and vice versa. Not only that but several factions in the Ad Stella timeline are poised to become the main opposing force that Suletta and Miorine must overcome. If they want to get through, they’ll need to know who their friends and enemies are.
Who is the main candidate for the ultimate villain of the witch from Mercury?
Delling Rembran has all the characteristics of a major villain. He is a ruthless businessman, he is arrogant, firmly believes in social Darwinism and even considers his biological daughter as an asset. He was also directly responsible for the raid on the Vanadis Institute laboratory in Fólkvangr, which witnessed the deaths of many innocent scientists and staff members; the only survivors, Elnora and Ericht Samaya, were forced into hiding and presumably became Prospera and Suletta Mercury, respectively. Regardless of what Delling looks like in the future, these things cannot simply be ignored.
With that said, he showed some worthwhile qualities throughout Season 1, especially about his family. He may be cold to Miorine, but he was the first to invest in GUND-ARM Inc. and then, offer advice and praise on how she runs the company. He also protected her from shrapnel during the final part of the season while raising her mother; Miorine won’t admit it outright, but she wants to get along with her father. It is possible that as The Witch from Mercury progresses, audiences will be given more information about Delling’s past and with that, find more worthwhile qualities in him. Of course, he would still have to answer about what happened in Vanadis.
Prospera seems to be going in the opposite direction of Delling morally. She starts the series as Suletta’s loving mother who only wants what’s best for her. Many fans assume she’s Elnora seeking revenge for the Vanadis Incident, but even if that’s true, she still seems more right than Delling.
As Season 1 progressed, however, a dark side of Prospera was revealed. She keeps it a secret, even from her own daughter, and kills without remorse. Many fans have also criticized her for manipulating her daughter’s feelings to become a cold-blooded killer; it got to the point where some people believe her “move forward, get two” is some kind of dozing agent code for Suletta. All of this says nothing about her resemblance to Char “I’ve never betrayed anyone in my life” Aznable. She clearly has ulterior motives, and they may not be in Suletta’s best interest.
Who are the other main villains of The Witch from Mercury?
Aside from Delling and Prospera, several other factions could soon cause serious trouble. Multiple divisions of Delling’s Benerit Corporation appear poised to take a big step forward in the arms race between them, including the Grassley Defense System, Jeturk Heavy Machinery, and Peil Technology; The CEOs of such organizations can therefore become a major threat. Dawn of Fold also causes a lot of trouble near the end of the season, though they seem more like Earth villains than outspoken villains; it’s important to remember that Earthlings are an oppressed minority in the Ad Stella timeline. Even if none of these groups become the series’ final villains, they’re certainly worth keeping an eye on.
Chances are, none of the major factions in The Witch From Mercury are good or evil. As with most of the Gundam series, all parties involved will likely be covered in all sorts of gray; this includes people who work for or lead such parties as Delling and Prospera. If Suletta and Miorine want to find true peace and happiness for themselves, they may have to realize the ambiguous nature of the world and chart their own path.
