Calcifer is designed in the style of many official Ghibli products, often paying tribute to famous character moments or scenes from their respective films. Since he is essentially a living flame, Calcifer relies on firewood to grow. Accordingly, “Calcifer's Flickering Candelight” was inspired by a scene in Howl's Moving Castle, where the demon begins to run out of fuel, causing his flame to decrease in size and turn from red to orange, and eventually is blue. As the product description details, Calcifer's facial expressions recreate his “uncomfortable state every time Sophie moves him away from the fireplace in the story.”
