Pride Month is coming to an end, as is the Spring 2024 anime season. Coinciding with the final days of this LGBTQ+-focused month, a recent fan-submitted survey revealed that a new addition to the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is considered the most popular yuri anime of 2024.
Anime Site! Anime! of Japan conducted a poll of readers about their favorite love anime for girls. From June 12 to 16, 2024, 733 users responded to the survey. According to the website, 50% of voters were male, about 40% were female, and about 10% did not respond, with more women than men in the latter group. 35% are under 19 years old, while 30% are in their 20s. This means that the younger demographic makes up the majority of this year's girl love poll.

Since its release in 2022, The Witch from Mercury has been credited with giving the long-running Gundam series the boost it needed to reconnect with younger fans. The series has deviated from the traditional Gundam setting in several ways, such as its school-based format and its female protagonist—something that was previously frowned upon by higher-ups. While previous male-led Gundam series have occasionally embraced LGBTQ+ undertones, the romantic relationship between Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran—an homage to Revolutionary Girl Utena—was the first time a same-sex couple was confirmed in a mainstream Gundam series. However, Bandai Namco Entertainment faced some backlash from fans when it attempted to retract Suletta and Miorine as a couple following The Witch from Mercury's finale.

The top 10 most popular yuri anime of 2024 have some surprises
Of the top 10 yuri anime listed in the poll, perhaps the most surprising is Whisper Me a Love Song. Although the manga has a large following, the currently airing anime adaptation has encountered serious production problems believed to be due to overworked staff. However, because loving the manga or anime still represents what people loved about the original series, Whisper Me a Love Song is still connecting with viewers. Meanwhile, left out of the poll are mainstays of the yuri genre that ranked highly in 2023, such as the classic Maria-sama ga Miteru.
The Witch From Mercury is available to stream on Crunchyroll. Whisper Me a Love Song is now available to stream on HIDIVE. Both streaming services, along with Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, include many anime series centered around LGBTQ+ relationships.
