Warning: The following contains spoilers for Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen!!
One of the biggest surprises of Jujutsu Kaisen comes from Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, which brings fans one of the community's most beloved characters, Choso. Choso was very devoted to his brothers, who were his only company during the 150 years of being suspended and unable to grow up. But two of these brothers, Kechizu and Eso, quickly ended their lives after falling in love with Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki. That dynamic duo took them down and Choso set out to avenge his lost brothers.
Choso nearly took down Yuji during the Shibuya Incident. But when he was finally able to strike a fatal blow and avenge his brothers, Choso suddenly remembered a memory that didn't happen – where he, his brothers, and Yuji enjoyed an afternoon together as a family.
It shocked Choso so much that he quickly switched to Itadori's side and called him his younger brother. But at first glance, these two are definitely not related, so there's a big question mark as to why Choso looks at Yuji this way. The answer is surprisingly simple, but they actually share the same parents.
Choso and Yuji's family relationship
Their surprising family connection
This explanation at first makes no sense. Choso was born more than one hundred and fifty years before Jujutsu Kaisen began, and has remained stagnant to this day. Meanwhile, Yuji seems to have a 'normal' life, even if his parents passed away when he was young. So how will they share their parents? Such a person would have to be immortal, or at least very, very old. Fortunately, in order to identify the mysterious common parent, Choso actually identified his father at the end of the Shibuya Incident – it was Kenjaku.
This body-hopping monster, at one point, took the form of Noritoshi Kamo, his actions causing him to be labeled throughout history as one of the most evil wizards ever. now. He then created the Death Paintings, creatures born from a curse and a woman. While living as Kamo, Kenjaku infused his own blood into these creatures. This causes Choso to view Kenjaku as his father, whom he deeply resents for mistreating his mother. Kenjaku then abandoned Kamo's body and took on a new one. Somewhere before Yuji was born, he took on the body of another witch, but this body was that of a specific woman.
Yuji's mother is Choso's father
Kenjaku's ability to control his body allows him to be both
Kenjaku himself is simply a brain that jumps from one body to another. He is considered male, as the most notable bodies he inhabits – those of Sugeru Geto and Noritoshi Kamo – are male. But at some point, Kenjaku took over the body of Kaori Itadori, a sorceress who was married to Jin Itadori, Yuji's father. Together, they have a child – the main character of the series, Yuji. So Kenjaku is actually Yuji's mother. This was enough for Choso to recognize and proudly call Yuji his younger brother, and technically it was true, because they are half-brothers in Kenjaku.
This is enough for Choso to recognize and proudly call Yuji his younger brother, which is technically true, as they are half-siblings in Kenjaku.
In a sense, Choso was actually Yuji Itadori's older brother, a connection that later opened up an interesting opportunity for Yuji to become even stronger. By eating and absorbing other unawakened Death Paintings, Yuji is able to absorb a new technique in the Piercing Blood, bringing him closer to his half-brothers. So one of the biggest mysteries of Jujutsu Kaisen there's actually a very simple answer, even if Kenjaku complicates it by constantly jumping his body.
