Summary
The official poll of One Piece's best scenes currently has an extra scene revolving around Luffy's dream at number 4. This scene can be considered a filler given how little it is in the manga and it was extremely popular for its stunning artwork, animation, and treatment of the source material. That scene and others all do a great job of showing how good subtext can be if done right.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its founding A piece anime, Toei Animation is underway a fan poll to determine the 30 best scenes in the animeD. Provisional results for the top 10 were announced on the official X account at the end of June, and final results for the top 30 will be revealed on August 10 as part of One Piece Day 2024.
The One Piece scenes currently in the top 10 are all scenes that are often praised as the best scenes in the series, but one scene, the one at number 4, stands out in particular: the flashback scene of Yamato learning that Luffy and Roger had the same dream.
Stunning artwork and direction is one thing, but what's even more impressive is The scene where Yamato learns about Luffy's dream is essentially extra. It's a testament to how good filler can be, and luckily it's not the only example in the One Piece anime.
How One Piece Anime uses filler to create one of its best scenes
Scene from One Piece episode #1015: “Straw Hat Luffy – The One Who Will Become Pirate King”
While Yamato knew about Luffy and Roger having the same dream that happened in the One Piece manga, the execution was completely different in the anime. In the manga, all that happened was a few frames of internal monologue, but in the anime, Yamato's realization was shown by witnessing Luffy and Roger revealing their dreams to Ace, Sabo, Whitebeard and Oden as if this were happening in real time. It adds more to the moment than the manga's straightforward handling of things, and it's the perfect way to sell its appeal.
The direction of the scene also plays an important role in why it is so highly rated. Thanks to director Megumi Ishitani, the scene where Yamato realizes Luffy and Roger have the same dream was rendered in stunning color and animation, and it's an important reason why One Piece episode #1015 is often considered a one of the best episodes in the anime. Overall, the A piece The anime took what was basically nothing in the manga and expanded on it with stunning and creative animationand that's why this scene is so appreciated, even though it's just a side scene.
One Piece has finally mastered the spin-off in recent years
The scene where Yamato realizes Luffy and Roger have the same dream is unlikely to be the last time One Piece uses filler like that. In the two years that have passed since episode #1015, A piece repeatedly used filler as a means to expand the story with stunning animationwith notable examples including the fight between Zoro and King and the rematch between Luffy and Lucci. Those examples and others did a great job of adding life to the story just like the Yamato scene, and sure enough, they all received praise from fans and critics alike.
What makes all of that even better is how much One Piece changes. In recent years, one piece Secondary content is now used to great effect through better pacing and directionand now, anime supplements are often considered better than the original manga. The scene where Yamato learns that Luffy and Roger had the same dream is the perfect example of how good that is. A pieceits complement has been received and it is likely to remain just as highly rated once the rankings are finalized on One Piece Day 2024.
