The movie Utsubora – A Story of a Novelist will premiere on premium subscription TV and streaming service WOWOW on March 24 at 11:30 p.m. KST. (9:30 a.m. EST) and there will be eight episodes. On WOWOW Prime, the first episode will be free.
Hiroto Hara will direct the film, with a script by Kazuhisa Kodera and Kiko Inoue. Yūji Iwamoto composed the music.
Vertical published the manga in English, and the publisher describes the story:
Young author Aki Fujino seems ready to make a big splash in the publishing world. Her debut title Utsobora has been introduced to a number of editors and at least one feels it is set to launch her into stardom. However, before she can publish her book, the young woman is found dead. Some believe it was a suicide, but those close to her feel something more sinister is involved in the young talent’s death.
Aki’s death has become something of a mystery. Like the story behind Utsubora, there’s something more about Aki, Sakura and their relationship with an author named Misoro than meets the eye. And maybe the only way to solve this mystery is to uncover all their secrets.
Nakamura published the manga in Ohta Publishing’s Manga Erotics F magazine from 2008 to 2012, and Ohta Publishing released the manga in two volumes. Vertical published the manga in a single volume.
The Digital Manga Guild previously released Nakamura’s Classmate and Sotsugyōsei manga in English, and Seven Seas later licensed both in 2018 and released them in three volumes in 2019. Seven Seas also licensed them. for Nakamura’s Sora and Hara and the story OB.
A-1 Pictures produced an animated film adaptation of the Classmate manga that premiered in Japan in February 2016. Aniplex of the United States and Azoland Pictures released the film in U.S. theaters in May. 2016, and Aniplex of America released the film on Blu-ray Disc in September of that year.
