Square Enix recently confirmed that the anime adaptation of Yuu Morikawa’s supernatural comedy manga, Mr. Villain’s Day Off (Kyūjitsu no Warumono-san), will be shown on the big screen.
Announced earlier this year, the anime’s first teaser trailer was revealed by Animefly, teasing a mysterious adaptation with dark comedy elements. The trailer also confirms the film will be released in 2024, although an exact date has yet to be announced.
Released in its original Japanese language, the trailer introduces a brief battle of evil, before quickly shifting its tone to a more cheerful theme. Accompanying the image is a monologue, translated as the leader of an evil organization, talking about their daily efforts to destroy humanity and make Earth their home planet. However, one vacation, the General’s trip to the zoo introduced him to pandas, thus beginning a strange obsession with increasing their population.
Famous voice actor Shintarō Asanuma will take on the role of Warumono-san (General). Directed by Yoshinori Odaka, who is known for his work on B-Daman CrossFire and BEM, the anime is produced by Shin-Ei Animation and SynergySP. Midori Gotou, known for his role as Cold Hozuki, will write the series’ script, while the character designs will be done by Tomomi Shimazaki, who is known for his work on Elegant Yokai Apartment Life. The soundtrack will be composed by Nobuaki Nobusawa (Dagashi Kashi and Steins; Gate 0).
Created in 2018 as a webcomic for the website Gangam Pixiv, Morikawa’s manga has been well received and gained a loyal fan base over the years. The series has so far released five tankōbon volumes. Earlier this year, Square Enix licensed manga translation rights to the website Manga Up! and will release story collections.
The series synopsis on the website reads: “An evil organization from another planet is trying to take over Earth. An alien from that organization named ‘The General’ fights tirelessly against Earth’s defenders every day in a battle to the death! However, today is his day off.”
Mr. Villain’s Day Off will release sometime in 2024.
