Netflix recently released the first official clip for the upcoming Scott Pilgrim anime adaptation.
The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off clip opens with Scott (voiced again by Michael Cera) talking to Julie (Aubrey Plaza), hoping to find clues about the elusive Ramona Flowers. Even though she forbids Scott from pursuing Ramona, he immediately runs back to his roommate Wallace (played by Succession star Kieran Culkin) to order a package and arrange a chance meeting with the girl in your dream. Netflix inserts itself here, describing Ramona as a Netflix DVD delivery driver rather than an Amazon driver – a job that now has very different connotations than it did in the original source material.
Is the Anime similar to other adaptations?
Although the characters’ voices are familiar to audiences of the 2010 cult classic, executive producers Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski emphasized that Netflix’s anime adaptation is not just another remake of the original comic book or live-action movie. They noted in an interview that the Edgar Wright film adaptation contained elements that they certainly considered when making the anime. Of course, the original eight episodes also have this element, as the character designs are the same as first depicted on the page.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off retains a large number of their original voices, many of whom have gone on to become major celebrities; The Netflix clip teases the introduction of Lucas Lee, played by Captain America’s Chris Evans, who will also return to the series. Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson will also reprise her role as Envy Adams, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the mysterious Ramona Flowers among many others. Considering how many characters actually existed in Scott Pilgrim, it’s impressive that so many actors reunited for the project.
Since the live-action film only introduced some of the aforementioned characters, the anime will give it the opportunity to expand on the stories of more characters. Much of the plot is based on Ramona’s history with her seven evil exes, who continue to catalyze Scott’s journey; According to O’Malley, neither the movie nor the comics were able to provide full details about their relationship with Ramona. In Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, viewers will have the opportunity to learn more about each evil ex.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will release on Netflix on November 17.
