Tencent helplessly, it takes 9 years to still not develop this game
The blockbusters usually take a few years to develop, with “heavy” AAA games like Black Myth: Wukong only takes about 6 years. Yet there is a game, taking up to 9 years in the lasts, it is still put into “trash basket”. Even this game is also invested by “big” Tencent to invest and develop but still unsuccessful.
That is the story of Uncharted Waters: Lord of the Sea. Accordingly, this game was developed by Tianxi Interactive Entertainment, a subsidiary of Shengtian Network – a representative branch of Tencent Games. The game recently announced the termination of development after 9 years from the first announcement.
Uncharted Waters: Lord of the Sea is an authorized game by Koei Tecmo's Uncharted Waters 4. In 2015, the game officially launched the production process and was positioned as a traditional online MMO game. In 2021, Tencent won the control of this game, but after many tests recorded too bad results, Tencent abandoned Uncharted Waters: Lord of the Sea in late 2023.
Uncharted Waters: Lord of the Sea has nothing that makes Tencent also helpless?
In fact, the Uncharted Waters brand has been on the game market for a long time. The first version of this IP was launched in 1990, successfully exploiting the historical, political, economic factors … to become one of the most attractive naval games.
However, to the game of Uncharted Waters: Lord of the Sea, players' reviews in the test are very bad. Most think that the gameplay is too tedious, “hanging goat head, selling dog meat” on a famous game brand before. Some even suggest that the game is developed just to “draw” of the player, because of the monetary system and the ridiculous upgrade mechanism.
Perhaps, this will be one of Tencent's most forgotten projects in their game history. In the end, the most disadvantaged is still the fans, who had to wait for this game for too long without receiving anything.
