Attack the giant is set to release a new chapter for the manga and that could work to rectify the series’ controversial ending. On April 30, 2024, the new artbook Attack on Titan FLY will feature a short story by Hajime Isayama called Attack on Titan volume #35. This will be Isayama’s first official content in three years, so suffice it to say it’s attracting a lot of attention.
It’s not yet known what content will be covered in Attack on Titan issue #35, but whatever it is, this is a perfect opportunity to rectify the manga’s controversial ending. Attack on Titan’s original ending was one of the biggest controversies in manga in recent years, especially the extended version in episode #34, even to the point that Hajime Isayama was aware of it and felt the need to apologize for doing that. ending of the series and left everyone upset. There are many reasons to change the ending and episode #35 could be the perfect opportunity to make it happen.
How Attack On Titan Episode #35 could fix the original ending
The ending of Attack on Titan was controversial because it implied that Eren never had true agency and only followed a predetermined path to free Ymir Fritz, which many felt ruined the journey. trying to find Eren’s freedom. Making things worse is the infamous Eren crying about how he doesn’t want Mikasa to love anyone else but him; even if Eren was truly in love with Mikasa the whole time, the scene still felt out of character and had too many tonal shifts for what was supposed to be a serious scene.
Adding to the controversy is an extended version of the ending in episode #34. Volume #34 added pages to the final chapter revealing that at some point after the Rumble, the other nations of the world rebuilt their armies and bombed Paradis, thus making the effort Protecting their loved ones is completely controversial and creating a relationship has occurred. The bittersweet ending feels unnecessarily depressing. Add in some pretty divisive character work, most notably the treatment of Mikasa at the end and some revisions to Ymir Fritz’s character, and Attack on Titan’s ending is one that still controversial for the next two years.
Volume #35 may fix all of these problems, but it’s still not an easy task. Of course, it would be easy to dismiss the original ending as non-canon, but something perhaps would have worked better if episode #35 had simply shown that Mikasa, Armin, and the others weren’t caught up in the bombing of Heaven. That wouldn’t take away the sad nature of Paradis being destroyed after all Eren’s been through, but if at least his loved ones survived, it would make their actions is much less pointless and makes the controversial nature of the ending easier to accept.
Surely episode #35 will easily fix the original ending of Attack on Titan, but whether it can do so is another story. Comments from Hajime Isayama suggest that despite the controversial nature of the ending, it was how he wanted his series to end, so Isayama may have felt no need to change anything about it. and episode #35 could be something completely unrelated.
