Tomo-chan is a girl! is delivering on what it promised in Episode 2 through a masterful use of humour, editing, and character writing.

The following contains spoilers for Tomo-chan Is a Girl!, Episode 2, “Tomo’s Skirt / The School Idol,” currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

Divided into two chapters, Tomo-chan Is a Girl! Episode 2 probably exceeded the audience’s expectations with its elaborate plot, humor and excellent humor. Addressing rather sensitive issues — such as sexual harassment — with unexpected caution, the anime continues with Tomo’s struggle to win Jun’s attention, as well as introducing a new character. new, who changed the dynamics of the story.

More than anything else, however, the anime has proven that what seemed to have hidden comedic potential in Episode 1 can actually turn into proper humor. The attention to detail and superb editing skills turn an ordinary ordinary anime into a truly enjoyable one — Tomo-chan’s characters have quirky personalities that are well suited to chaotic and funny.

Tomo-chan’s character has a funny personality

Arguably the funniest character in Tomo-chan, Misuzu really comes to life in Episode 2. Though she comes across as more cranky and scheming than anything else in the premiere, the sentences are Her terse replies and nonchalant reaction in the latest episode brought out the right laughs at the right moment. A prime example is when she dashes Tomo’s hopes that Jun might consider her a girl with the perfect expression, “I’m sorry. That is an irresponsible thing to say.”

The newly introduced Carol, a beautiful girl with a tough and tough personality to her, also has a lot of interesting things. Usually acting like a child, she doesn’t care about social cues and simply does what she wants. After seeing Tomo with her betrothed Misaki – who clearly has a crush on her – Carol starts calling her ‘baka’ [stupid]’ at each turn, making Tomo’s life miserable and allowing Misuzu to reiterate that Tomo knows very little about girls. In another beautiful moment, Carol rushes out of Jun’s locker to ask for help in defeating Tomo, who is her temporary enemy.

Tomo-chan’s humorous timing and interactions deliver the right moments of humor

However, comedic personalities would fail without expertly delivered pauses and expert editing. It’s the silence before a breakout and the unexpected mess that reveals the strange situations that really make humor so enjoyable. For example, when Carol asks Misuzu for help, it’s not until Misuzu says “But first, get off my desk” that viewers realize Carol is comfortably sitting on Misuzu’s desk, as if it were completely normal. often.

The conflicting personalities and goals, established in Episode 1, also contribute to Tomo-chan’s sense of humor. Jun and Misuzu continue to bicker like an old couple while a new dynamic is developed between Carol and Misuzu providing a new source of humor. Carol’s ignorant frankness and Misuzu’s cold answers are the perfect match that doesn’t stop them from becoming friends.

All in all, Episode 2 proves that Tomo-chan is a girl! can really deliver what it promised with setup and testing. If it continues to exploit the quirks of the characters and incorporate great timing, it could certainly turn out to be an interesting addition to Winter 2023.
