The long-awaited ending of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga created intense debates among fans, as it failed to live up to expectations. However, if you compare it with the general endings of the anime below, Jujutsu Kaisen's ending wouldn't be the worst.
Here are five anime series whose endings are perhaps less satisfying than Jujutsu Kaisen's:
Erased
Erased (Boku Dake ga Inai Machi) is a masterful horror series that intertwines time travel, murderers, and the supernatural. Right from the start, the story becomes so tense that it forces viewers to sit on the edge of their seats the entire time. The best part of the anime is when the main character Satoru goes crazy trying to find out the identity of the murderer.
However, quite surprisingly, even after finding out that person's identity, the real reason behind his wrongdoing remained unanswered.
Because the series failed miserably to provide the audience with meaningful answers, the otherwise engaging plot left a feeling of disappointment, frustration, and regret.
Tokyo Ghoul
The anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul turned out to be a poignant reminder of why anime should not deviate from manga. With a great plot in the manga, the creative liberties taken in the anime resulted in a disastrous ending.
The mistake started with Tokyo Ghoul Root A, which failed to properly explain Ken Kaneki's journey to becoming a creature of darkness. The next installment in an attempt to make up for these mistakes is Tokyo Ghoul: re. However, it was too late and the new season could not repair the damage caused by the previous season, leaving viewers disappointed.
The Promised Neverland
The sudden drop in quality between seasons of The Promised Neverland was a shocking experience. The anime did a great job in its first season, following a group of orphans who discover the dark truth that they are essentially commodities in a world ruled by demons. By the second season, the rushed pacing and narrative shortcuts undermined the series' overall potential.
The second part covers many important plots from the manga and also skips some. This makes later events difficult to explain, only leaving viewers disappointed and frustrated with this once very promising anime.
Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan has a complex storyline, capturing the hearts of global audiences. The first few seasons of the anime became one of the fan favorites, especially season 4.
However, in the final story, Eren's mysterious motives were concluded in an unsatisfactory way, without much depth. His entire journey was sabotaged by just one shallow emotional statement, all because he loved Mikasa.
Some details added at the end of the film, such as the line “Only Ymir knows” and the change in Eren's mother's death, also confused the audience. As a result, the ending of Attack on Titan is considered one of the worst anime mistakes in recent times, destroying the show's extraordinary potential and leaving a very bad taste in the hearts of all watch loyally.
The Future Diary
The Future Diary initially weaves together complex plot threads for a very satisfying ending that ties up many loose ends. But just when you think it can't get any worse, the series suddenly and very unfortunately takes a confusing turn
An abrupt ending transports viewers 10,000 years into the future and introduces a new Diary Game, one that ends without a conclusion. Viewers were forcibly denied closure on this cliffhanger, leaving questions that remained unanswered for years, until The Future Diary: Redial debuted. The wait only made for greater disappointment, as the original anime's ending was marked as an unfinished mess.
