Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvel Studios' only movie project in 2024, and is also one of Hollywood's most successful blockbusters so far this year. This film has earned more than 1.3 billion USD in global box office revenue, and also became the highest-grossing R-rated work of all time.
It seems that Marvel Studios doesn't want the success of Deadpool & Wolverine to stop at just the numbers. Recently, Variety revealed that this studio is aiming for bigger professional awards, including the Golden Globes and Oscars.
Specifically, Marvel will send Deadpool & Wolverine to the Golden Globes organizers to compete for nomination in the Best Comedy Movie category, and actor Ryan Reynolds will compete in the Best Actor category. Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman is expected to be on the list of Best Supporting Actor nominees at many different awards, including the Oscars, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards. Besides, similar to many other MCU projects, Deadpool & Wolverine will also target other technical categories such as cinematography or production design.
Previously, Marvel Studios also received a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category at the 2023 Oscars, for Angela Bassett for her role as Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With Hugh Jackman's excellent performance in Deadpool & Wolverine, plus the fact that the actor has been attached to the role of Logan for a very long time (24 years), Marvel fans have the right to hope that he will make it into the role. List of nominations for next year's Oscars.
However, history has shown that, in categories related to actors, superhero film projects often do not have many advantages, and this film genre often has more strength in the technical aspect. As for Marvel Studios, they have also become “regular guests” of the Oscars over the past 15 years, but have not really conquered too many major categories.
Out of 33 released movie projects, Marvel received 19 nominations, mainly related to effects or sound effects, and production design. However, they have only tasted victory twice, with Black Panther (Costume Design, Soundtrack and Production Design categories) in 2019; and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Costume Design category) in 2023.
